Peer Mentors run a Buddy Scheme for new members and ensure everyone is happy, secure and aware of all opportunities. They promote integration between our wide demographic (1/3 of members have specific needs).

The membership of Stage2 is made up of a variety of young people aged 7-21 who come from different backgrounds, cultures, beliefs, ability, confidence and experience levels, socio-economic groups and geographical areas. As is the case with all young people, sometimes members can find it difficult or intimidating to settle into a new social group or might be guarded because of past experiences. We are also very aware of the ever-building social pressures on young people.
Stage2 members are all recognised as individuals (Every Child Matters) and we are proud to embrace any “quirks and eccentricities,” actively celebrating people’s different skills. We wish to actively encourage (through a Peer Mentoring Scheme and intrinsic mentoring ethos) positive social and productive working relationships between young people.
Mentors receive training to enable them to support members at a basic level and then refer to staff as appropriate. They are clear role models.
To ensure no-one is ever left out. They make everyone confident enough to take any option they wish.
Activities» Pro-actively engaging with members who might be finding social situations challenging and bringing people together to work and socialise positively.
Mentors can periscope during sessions to ensure everyone is involved and happy - this will be evidenced by photographs, verbal and written feedback from company members.
To welcome new members to the company and explain our ethos, principles and events & opportunities.
Activities» Through an extensive Buddy System which provides new members with information, support and time to ask questions to a friendly approachable person.
Use the established buddy scheme to check if new members are settling in and answer any questions they have - this will be evidenced on paperwork filled out by the Mentor.
Motivate current Stage2 members to keep them galvanised, enthusiastic, happy, positive and informed!
Activities» Through active participation in sessions, by being consistent and clear role models and through providing events to bring company members together.
Mentors will be clear role models and be people for current members to aspire to - this will be evidenced by photographs, and verbal and written feedback from company members.
Provide accurate and relevant information to ensure members, families & teachers are up to date.
Activities» Provide information about day-to-day logistics and long-term opportunities at events in a front of house role, on Saturdays and via email in the week.
Mentors will answer questions and queries from other members, parents and the general public at events - this will be evidenced from paperwork that it is produced and feedback.
Over the next three years, Peer Mentoring will develop further at Stage2, with a firmer emphasis on peer management of the scheme, refining of the roles and (funding-dependant), higher levels of training and accreditation for mentors and staff.
We will evidence this from our own internal monitoring and evaluation systems as well as receiving feedback at different stages throughout the project and from a range of different sources including members, families, teachers and care-workers etc.
There is a risk that a Mentor could drop out of the scheme throughout the year but we always ensure that we have a strong team so that if one person did drop out then there would be enough mentors to carry on the scheme effectively.
Even after a thorough interview and induction process a Mentor could be unsuitable. We would have full appraisals, provide additional training and support and discuss the situation at length with the individual, coming to a mutually agreeable solution.
We will produce termly reports with different pieces of evidence - written and pictorial - each time to support the points that we make. This will be written primarily by the Mentor Manager but with input from other staff & members. It will be varied and produced from a variety of sources.

Stage2's weekly Saturday sessions take place at Millennium Point in Birmingham's East side currently going through a massive re-development with a new park and several new buildings. It is also where the the new HC2 train service will stop.
The location is good for us as it means we can have members from all over the West Midlands as it means that people can get to us by one mode of transport as it is in the city centre. Bus stops and train stations are within a short walking distance.
Our membership demographic is extremely varied; we have members from a whole range of areas all over the West Midlands, some wealthy and some of social deprivation (and probably everywhere in between). Many have specific needs; 1/3 have special needs and 1/5 are financially challenged (we provide subsidies).
All members will benefit from this project as they all have interaction with the mentors on a weekly basis. They can have as much support as they wish at any particular time.
Stage2 operates (and has always operated) with a mentoring culture; encouraging members to support one another and to mix widely and openly, creating positive and trusting relationships which will aid their social development. In 2006, Stage2 set up its first Peer Mentoring Scheme which grew and developed, organically over time.
Our scheme is accredited by the National Mentoring & Befriending Foundation; and we are the first Youth Theatre in the UK to receive such status and we are very proud.

Chloe will be the Mentor Manager for the scheme. She will ensure the smooth running of the scheme through interaction with staff and the team.
Liz is the Company Director and will provide support for Chloe and the whole team/scheme. She will also provide training for the team as required.
Lucy is the Company Manager and will provide support for Chloe and the whole team/scheme. She will also provide training for the team as required.
Alex is the Admin Manager and will provide administrative support for Chloe and the scheme.
