  • Need

Children in Bootle have limited access to the imaginative world generated by books and literature. Bootle has no bookshop and only 3 small libraries which are all under threat of closure. In recent phonics tests children were better at reading nonsense words than real words - words such as ‘Jazz’ and ‘Turnip’ were not in their vocabulary as these words are not within the experience of a non-book culture. We want to change this as a love of reading can lead to greater life chances.

The Bootle children's literary festival has 4 strands:
    1. Taking a famous author into all Bootle primary schools for assemblies and workshops
    2. A 2 day literary extravaganza for 600 children hosted by famous authors including workshops on creative writing, illustrating, reading for pleasure and rapping
    3. Opening a 2 week pop-up bookshop in the local shopping centre selling new and second hand children's books
4, Children's Poetry competition leading to a published book

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To stage the Bootle Children's Literary Festival

» Schools literary festival - taking published authors into all local primary schools for workshops and assemblies
» literary fest - 2 day event for 600 children with creative workshops around story telling, reading for pleasure, creative writing and illustrating
» pop-up book shop - selling new and second hand children's books in the run up to Christmas as well as offering author signings and activities
» Children's poetry competition - with the poems of winners and runners up being published in a poetry book.

    What success will look like

success will be measured by feedback from children and teachers, attendance at events, footfall in the bookshop and number of and quality of entries in the poetry competition.

  • Impact

it is our ambition to increase children's love of reading. This will be measured by taking a benchmark assessment about their attitude to reading at the beginning and end of the project and again 6 months after completion. We are treating the pop-up bookshop as a pilot project which if successful we wish to make a regular activity. This has 2 benefits; high street regeneration by making use of empty shop 'voids' in the local shopping centre and giving children access to cheap, quality books.

Children could not engage - all the local schools are on-board and excited to be part of the project. The event has also been publicised extensively in local press and with local organisations
authors could not come - all authors have been booked in advance including Levi Tafari and Alan Gibbons
Low footfall in bookshop - it is opening in November to catch the Christmas shoppers, the bookshop will also offer activities and author signings to increase footfall.

A full evaluation report will be written after the project incorporating feedback, participation, engagement and impact which can be circulated to all interested parties. Updates, quotes and photos will be published on Ykids website as well as on our facebook profile and twitter feed.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Ykids has a proven track record of delivering large scale events aimed at children in Bootle. Our work spans the whole of Bootle and therefore isn't limited to smaller wards or school catchment areas. Our designated schools team has strong, positive relationships with staff and children in local primary school and our input and creative delivery is both welcomed and encouraged. We have strong links with the strand shopping centre and have been offered the use of an empty shop for our bookshop
