  • Need

DAST aim to raise awareness of the damage that asbestos can inflict on peoples' health. Mesothelioma is a little known but terrible disease and we wish to gain a wider and better understanding of how it is contracted and how health and families can suffer damage.

This event publicises the effect of Mesothelioma on the East Midlands population. It gives the families left behind opportunity to talk about their experiences and share these with others who understand.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

We aim to publicise the causes and effects of Mesothelioma.

» We will hold a well publicised Reflection and Celebration of Life event each July. This includes speakers, readings, music etc.

    What success will look like

Success of our publicity will be demonstrated through the numbers attending and coverage achieved in local and social media.

    Aim 2

To bring together all those who have been affected by a loved-one's death from Mesothelioma.

» Messages are placed on a reflection tree and doves released in memory of loved ones. Afternoon tea allows people to meet and chat.

    What success will look like

Those affected will be invited to write a message on a card for the reflection tree to share with everyone. They will then attend afternoon tea together.

  • Impact

The event will bring awareness of Mesothelioma into the community, and provide a focus for families of victims. This will be demonstrated by the response to the day.

The only risk is that there is a lack of funding to cover the costs of the day. We have sought sponsorship from trade unions and have received some donations from them.

We will take photographs of the day and compile a reflection book from the reflection roses.
