Embo Clinic Staff

We've raised funds to build a Clinic in Embo, a KwaZulu Natal township with no doctor and, until now, no clinic. The Health Authority have promised to suppport running costs from 2015 but we need to fund nursing and support staff for at least 2014.

January 2014 - December 2014

  • Need

Embo residents lack affordable access to basic healthcare; in particular, HIV testing and counselling as well as antenatal care. We've raised funds to give them a building within the community and the Health Authority plan to supply drugs and staff costs. But the staff costs won't be met until 2015, so we need to raise those to get the building working!

It will fund the first accessible HIV testing and counselling service in District where 39.5% of women attending antenatal classes in 2011 were found to be HIV positive! And Embo is one of the worst areas within the District. A full time, dedicated team will transform health outcomes for Embo residents.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Provide accessible HIV testing, counselling & treatment plus basic healthcare for Embo residents.

» Complete the Clinic building during 2013
» Staff the Clinic from 2014

    What success will look like

Monitor Clinic visits and continuit of patient treatment

  • Impact

Through the education function, we would hope to see a decline in the prevalence of HIV which can be measured over time.
Through patient treatments, measuring improved health outcomes, especially a decline in TB cases.
Through antenatal classes, a decline in infant mortality and morbidity.

1 A delay to the building work; may involve unforeseen circumstances; supervision by experienced contractors should overcome this problem.

2 A potential challenge in recruiting suitably qualified staff; addressed by working with the Health Authority and training local volunteers.

  • Background

Embo is an informal settlement in KwaZulu Natal, about 40 minutes drive north north-west of Durban. Shelter is basic for most residents which is widely scattered in a part of the Valley of a Thousand Hills.

Embo has thousands of inhabitants with an abnormally high incidence of HIV and Aids and associated unemployment and poverty. Our Partner is a church which has trained a team of Home based Caregivers; MAI funds this project in terms of staff, transport and consumables costs at present, though ultimately it will be funded from local social enterprise.
Beneficiaries will be ill patients, their families and especially the elderly who carry the burden of caring for the many Aids orphans.
