Artspace Bath: a 4 day contemporary arts event as a proof of concept to develop an ongoing contemporary artspace in Bath.

  • Need


    This venture aims to improve the distinctiveness, vitality and sustainability of Bath. Artspace will engage a wider audience in creativity and culture to support community cohesion.
    The problems in Bath:
    • Creative talent doesn’t have anywhere to exhibit
    • There is a dearth of activity for young people
    • Bath is overly identified as a tourist trap
    • Bath is stuck in the past: it is the ‘graveyard of ambition’


    The concept of engagement underpins both the temporary space and event and, ultimately, the need for a permanent, vibrant and imaginative arts space.
    The proposed 4 day event is a proof of concept template for the wider vision to:
    • Make visible our collective imagination as a city
    • Inspire and develop playfulness and creativity in local people of all ages
    • Encourage young people to stay in the city
    • Bring radical arts programming to Bath
    • Bring something entirely fresh to the city

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    To create a pop-up open-air interactive art space


    » We will create an imaginative, immersive and rejuvenating space, with a series of events and encounters driven by the question: 'Where is art?'

    Engagement will be the connective tissue between contemporary arts and their role in Bath’s reinvention and promoting well-being, cultural, economic and public value.

    Aim 2

    To create a space for children, young people and adults to make art alongside contemporary artists


    » We will engage contemporary artists across disciplines in a series of intergenerational workshops and actiivities

    The project will provide an inspiring and creative opportunity for children, young people and adults to participate in contemporary arts activities.

  • Impact


    The evidence of engagement and social change from the initial event will position Bath as:
    A world-class centre of imagination and inventiveness
    A magnet for global talent
    A meeting point for collaboration, play and enterprise
    A city that actively inspires the creative potential of its young people
    A city with outstanding and radical entrepreneurialism, human creative genius and wellbeing.


    Artists may pull out of the project so we will have a contingency plan in place.
    Weather may affect the site so we will have all weather provision in place.


    Donors to this project will receive a monthly email report detailing ongoing activities and forthcoming events.

    Artspace will help the people of Bath, adding a missing dimension to life in the city, engaging a wider audience in creativity and culture to support community cohesion.

    We are sure that creating a dedicated and lively artspace in the city will create a hub for avant garde and leading-edge creativity; and that this will have a knock-on effect in revitalising the city as a vibrant community.
