Health and Wellbeing

This is a chance for local communities to benefit from ancient Chinese knowledge and practices that promote health and wellbeing through classes that will educate people how to improve their diet, exercise their bodymind in a way that develops energy, be emotionally calm and how to live in harmony.

This is an ongoing annual project.

  • Need


    The World Health Organisation highlights that the main causes of early mortality could be prevented through improved diet and regular physical activity. Physical, mental and emotional health and wellbeing involves people taking self responsibility and requires education and practise. This project is aimed at providing such opportunities across 40 local community classes in the UK.


    The IDS organises classes across 40 local community centres in the UK. It has been doing this since it was constituted in 1989 and founded in the UK in 1934 by a Chinese businessman who resided in London for several years. The IDS trains teachers and organises weekend workshops and meditations as well as inviting Chinese experts to visit the UK.

    » The project will fund the promotion, delivery and evaluation of 40 local community educational classes run by qualified tutors and volunteers.

    Positive results from evaluations; adherence to programme as evidenced by registers.

  • Impact


    In 2007 a Master Degree student conducted a cross sectional study of 400 participants in our program and found 73% had made lifestyle changes as a result of participation. Longer term participation (over several years) resulted in improved lifestyle changes such as improved diet, cessation of smoking and recreational drugs, feeling better, reduced medication. This project is a progression of this work and follows its recommendations. Evaluation will monitor and report progress.


    One risk is where a tutor cannot attend a class for a particular reason - this is dealt with by buddying tutors up so that there is always cover available and also by designating assistant tutors (trainees) to classes.

    Another risk is health and safety - this is dealt with through implementing a policy that involves teaching guidelines and implemented controls from risk assessments.


    The charity Trustees Annual Report will be available on the Charity Commission website. Donors will be directed to this as well as receiving links to project updates available via the IDS website.

    Across the 40 classes being supported more than 800 local residents will benefit. There is a wide and varied background of participants that reflects the backgrounds of local residents.

    Why Us?

    Although the IDS has only recently registered as a charity it has been working in local communities since 1934 and was established in 1989. It was founded by a Chinese businessman who was a Daoist - someone who dedicated his life to improving health and wellbeing through ancient Chinese arts, science and philosophic means. The IDS is committed to continuing this heritage to benefit all.
