  • Need

Bais Rochel Dsatmar is an independent girls school with a student body of over 1100. Due to funding shortages, the school garden is in a state of disrepair, with only a bare garden available for the students to play in. Therefore PE and sports have lost their appeal for most students. This is having a negative impact on the health of the children, as children are exercising less.

The new playground will give the children the opportunity to work out and play in an exciting environment. The new and better facilities will attract more children and teens to take part in sports and after school clubs and will encourage better participation in PE classes. As a result we hope to improve attitudes towards fitness and effect changes in the lifestyles of our students so that their physical and emotional health is improved as a result.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

-Improve the playground and sports facilities at Bais Rochel Dsatmar.

» Straighten the floor in the garden so that it is level and safe for play.

We will measure the success of the project by having the playground ready and safe for use by September 2014

    Aim 2

-To increase children's levels of fitness and involvement in sport and physical exercise.

    » Improvement of play facilities.

We will measure the success of the project by a 45% increase in sport and exercise and participation in our after school clubs by at least 30%.

  • Impact

We want to increase the health and wellbeing of the Bais Rochel students. We want more children to exercise regularly and to view fitness as fun. We will measure the changes by distributing simple questionnaires to our users before and after the completion of the project, measuring how many hours a week they spend on fitness, how often they use the schoolyard for physical activity and how often they would use the new playground and equipment.

There is a risk that the project won't be completed for the new term 2014. In order to mitigate this risk we will ensure to start early and leave enough time. In order to mitigate the risk of students not being interested, and not using the equipment, we have asked students for their opinions- what they are interested in, and we will use their views in the project. We will also purchase high quality equipment to maintain interest in the project.

We will photograph children enjoying the new playground and sports area as soon as it is complete so that we can send them to our donors. We will keep our donors informed through quarterly updates.

  • Background

Bais Rochel is located in Hackney, North London, an area of poverty and deprivation. Amongst our students, the poverty levels are even higher than the Hackney average of 46%, compared to our levels of 76%.

Children and young people aged 6-16 will benefit from this project. Many of our users live in flats or basements and do not have regular access to a garden. Additionally, many users are afraid to use public parks, and therefore have very limited access to recreational facilities.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

School is a very good place to form good habits. Children will learn to enjoy exercise and physical play if they will have quality facilities to play in. Children will also develop social skills by having new social opportunities to play and spend time with friends. Children will be more likely to stay and play after school if there are proper provisions. This will again increase fitness and health for many children who do not have regular access to open spaces.
