Project information

Villa Santa Rosa Primary School

We provide nutritional support to underprivileged children in a primary school in a shanty town in Arequipa. We supply at least one hot meal every day. We provide other necessary resources at school to promote a more equal opportunity for them to learn educationally eg books, supplies etc

It is ongoing and the aim is to empower the community to learn to survive on their own.

Put Them First
  • Need

    Need

There is a huge issue where our school is situated. This community is in a shanty town on the outskirts of the city. It is almost as if they have been forgotten about. The government supplies the children some rations every 3 months but it is never close to enough to feed them. They don't receive enough books or resources. They are so deprived that we even supply the school supplies eg pencils, rubbers etc. They desperately need proper nutrition and a proper education.

    Solution

For almost 3 years we have been providing hot lunches for the Primary School. We have worked together with the community to ensure that our money goes directly to feeding the children. We establish a healthy menu together to ensure the children benefit as nutritionally as possible. Other money we fundraise goes towards the supplies they need for their schooling. This ensures a higher standard of schooling because they benefit from supplies they wouldn't normally be able to afford

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To provide nutritional support to the children of the school

    Activities

» We fundraise via awareness and events to finance the necessary food
» We liaise with nutritionists to ensure the food we provide is as healthy as possible

We visibly see the difference in the appearance of our children eg their skin is better, they have less ailments, they have higher concentration, they are happier and more alert

    Aim 2

To ensure better schooling and better opportunity educationally

    Activities

» We liaise with educational professionals to ensure that the books that are bought or the trips are aligned to their curriculum.

We work directly with the teachers in the school to follow the trajectory of educational progress. We help them establish what is best also and trust their knowledge

  • Impact

    Impact

The goal is empowerment to the community to provide their own nutrition and to understand what nutrition is best for their health. We want them to do it for themselves so if we lead by example and coach them to where they need to be. We bring up local professionals to discuss their habits to instill good behaviours. Regarding education, with better facilities and better books, the children will learn in a more conducive environment to read and to improve their lives.

    Risk

Fundraising is always a risk. Because we are not at a point where the community are self sufficient, it is important that we still provide the food and supplies. If we are low on money and fundraising isnt bringing in enough money, we need to be aware of this via our projections. We have learnt that we need to be very audacious in our fundraising goals so we are never in a precarious position ie not able to provide supplies for the children

    Reporting

I will personally be in contact with the donors. I will provide lists of the children in the school and we can provide school reports on their progress. We always provide receipts for all the food we buy to demonstrate what we are providing for the children.

  • Background

    Location

Villa Santa Rosa lies 40 minutes out from Arequipa centre and is a young community, barely 8 years old. As well as lacking basic infrastructure, including running water, the educational services available to the community are poorly resourced and supported by the government. It is situated on the outskirts in a very deprived area of the city.

    Beneficiaries

The children and the future communities of the Villa Santa Rosa area benefit greatly from our involvement. It is an area with approx 100 'huts' in an incredibly deprived area of the city, on the outskirts. It is a new community ie approx 10 years old with no running water nor sanitation. The improved schooling of the future generation will start to influence the status quo in a positive way.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Put Them First knows the area, we know the community, we know the people and their children, we know the teachers and the locals have a huge respect for what we do there. This is essential, and not always easy, when you are not the indigenous people involved with the project. Everyone is proud to work together to better the schooling and the future of the children and therefore the community as a whole.
