The name of the first Put Them First project is Manantiales Refuge Center in Arequipa, Peru . It provides a secure environment where struggling single mothers can send their children (from 0 to 4 years old) so they can go to work. We provide food, shelter, books and clothes for the refuge.
July 2011 - January 2016
Charity information: Put Them First
There is a dangerously large percentage of women in Peru who are single mothers and who are struggling to survive with no support. They are left on their own because their partner has left them and their families are so poor that they cannot feed another mouth. The only option to survive is to work but there is noone to look after their children. There are no agencies to assist nor any government support.
The Put Them First project is the answer to this problem. It supplies 3 hot meals every day and a roof over their heads. We also seek donations to clothe them and supplies to begin their educational development. The financial support we provide is crucial to the sustainability of the project. The work realised at this centre is pivotal to the shelter and wellbeing of the children. And importantly it enables the babies' mothers to work to provide for their families.
To provide a safe place for struggling single mothers to leave their children while they go to work
Activities» Our Godparent campaign enables the public to 'sponsor' a child. The monthly contribution supports the financial needs of the project
» We hold fundraising events throughout the year eg local events to promote awareness and to raise funds
What success will look like
The longevity of the project is a continued measure of our success. Also the rising number of children and mothers we can support
Firstly the mothers will begin to have more confidence and higher self-esteem. They are hugely undermined socially and psychologically in these areas on Arequipa and having a job is paramount to their self-confidence. This also enables them to be a much stronger role model for their children. We interview the mothers at regular intervals to ascertain their commitment to their job and how integral having the refuge for their children is to supporting their children.
A definite risk we have come across is regarding eligibility of candidates. This is such a scarce resource in Arequipa that it makes sense that many mothers recognise its role in society. We have however had many ladies try to join even though they had partners and family support. It has been previously difficult to uncover this information but now we have a thorough check of all applicants which has improved the validity accepted applicants.
Donors will receive monthly updates on exactly where the money has gone eg food for the children, resources for educational purposes, money for the carers etc. I will personally send this information as Director of the organisation

It is set in Arequipa, Peru. It is a large house just off the centre in a safe area. All the mothers and children live in very deprived areas so it is important they know that this area is very safe for their children, especially because they are leaving them with people who are essentially strangers at the beginning.
The lowest income mothers and children will benefit from this project. It targets specifically the demographic that need it most. Peru is a country that doesnt provide government assistance to their population so, as a single mother without any support, options are very very limited unless a project like this exists. Places are very scarce at the moment so growing capacity is a goal.
We know the locals, we know the language, we work with the indigenous community to understand who should be there and why. We have 100% support from everyone involved to carry out this project successfully and it has been proven over the last months how impactful it truly is. We check our applicants and we know the difference every one now makes to their family because they have this opportunity to work.
