Network Clubs and Camps

We believe that if HIV+ young people are educated about their status, not only will they learn about their condition and live full lives, but they will also educate their peers about the disease, enlightening a currently unconscious generation about the biggest killer they face.

  • Need

Lesotho has the second highest HIV infection rate in the world; an estimated 41,000 children and adolescents are infected with the virus in a population of just over 2 million. Poor education and the vast cultural stigma surrounding the condition causes weak treatment adherence, the single biggest cause of treatment failure. Sentebale therefore delivers programmes of education and psychosocial support to provide these vulnerable children the tools they need to lead healthy and productive lives.

This programme uses education to address the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS; at monthly network clubs children learn about HIV and share their experiences with each other for mutual support, whilst at residential camps we support over 1,500 children struggling to cope with their diagnosis per year at the newly opened Mamohato Children's Centre. At camp, children learn how to cope with their condition in a fun, supportive environment.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

A study by Sentebale showed that HIV+ children were isolated and received little support in their homes and communities. They had almost no opportunities to fully explore for themselves the reality of living with HIV and how they could transform their situation into one of hope and strength. The Programme was developed in response to the serious gap in HIV/AIDS education provision for young people in Lesotho.
