Mpantuase & Nkwabrim Kindergarten
We want to build a kindergarten for pre-school age children of the villages of Mpantuase and Nkwabrim, in theAshanti Region of Ghana. In this way, they will be kept safe from harm while their parents are at work.
June 2014 - June 2015
Mpantuase and Nkwabrim are communities of subsistence farmers, and adults spend most of the day on their farms. Babies and toddlers are left behind in the care of their siblings, who are often not old enough to look after them safely. This can result in major injuries to the babies.
By building a kindergarten babies and toddlers will be looked after in a safe environment until their parents return from work.
To build a kindergarten for the villables of Mpantuase and Nkwabrim
Activities» Raise finance, supervise bulding.
By the satisfaction of parents in the environment provided for their children; by the satisfaction of donors with the detailed reports we send; by monitoring for five years.
To ensure that babies and toddlers can be looked after safely while their parents are at work.
Activities» Observe the two villages as those select carers.
By the satisfaction of parents and the low injury rate.
For the villages to agree to finance local carers for the children.
Activities» This will be part of the initial bargain we make with the villages (they must also undertake all unskilled labour free of charge)
By the hiring by the villages of local women to act as carers.
Success will be measured by a steep fall in the rate of infant injuries, by a well-maintained building, by the satisfaction rating of the parents.
Risks include a sudden steep rise in the price of cement; flash storms damaging the unfinished building; community disagreements on how to proceed.
We try to buy the bulk of the cement in advance when prices are low; we rebuild after flash storms; we have considerable experience in settling community disagreements.
Donors will receive regular emails and photographs during the building, a full report and accounts at the conclusion of the work, and occasional reports thereafter.

Mpantuase (pop.546) & Nkwabrim (pop.778) are communities of subsistence farmers, situated in Sekyere Cebtral District of Ashanti. They grow plantain, cassava, corn, yam, cocoyam, vegetables and groundnuts, and have access to a borehole with clean wate.
They are sponsored by Hunckley & Lutterworth SpecSavers who have recently financed construction of one latrine perhousehold, together with training for the whole community in health and hygiene. They are amazingly grateful and cooperate well.
All pre-school age children in the two villages will benefit, as will their siblings who will not longer need to carry them round on their backs and otherwise look after them. Their parents will also benefit from the peace of mind that comes from knowing their children are safe.
Ashanti Development has worked in the area since 2005, has excellent relations in the area and a track record of supervising the construction of buildings including kindergartens.
