Lambeth Schools Ballet Outreach Performances

KLL performs regularly in schools in Lambeth, one of London’s most deprived boroughs to children who might otherwise not have the opportunity to experience ballet. All children from this outreach work are invited to take subsidised lessons in LRBS and try it for themselves.

  • Need

Many children in the Lambeth area have never experienced ballet or classical music. KLL breaks down the barriers to accessing this art form and engages young children in ballet with all the consequent benefits of increased self-respect, discipline and well being through continuous contact with an active art. KLL is passionate about broadening children’s outlooks and increasing aspirations by inclusion in an environment they might otherwise consider elitist.

KLL performs annually for over 1800 children in costume to bring the theatre experience to the local schools. The performances include a discussion of the story and music with a Q&A session. The response is uninhibited enthusiasm. Parents are especially encouraged to attend. All children from this outreach work are invited to take subsidised lessons at LRBS and in this way KLL provides a continuing pathway to either to weekly enjoyment of ballet or serious vocational Russian Ballet training.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Engage Lambeth children in Russian Ballet irrespective of background or means.

» Stage 8 performances in Lambeth schools during 2013.
» Invite all children from the outreach performances to subsidised lessons at LRBS.
» Provide a pathway for children to enjoy the highest standards of ballet training either for weekly enjoyment or vocationally.

    What success will look like

Success will be performing to around 1,800 children in local schools during the year and seeing a number of these children attend LRBS on an ongoing basis.

  • Impact

We expect to see an increase in the confidence, discipline and well being of the children who continue to attend ballet classes and will continue to work closely with local schools to track the progress of the students and we will measure success through both student and teacher feedback. Some of the children will eventually become performers for the outreach work and be able to help engage their peer group.

KLL has not identified any significant risks with this project.

KLL and LRBS regularly update their website on outreach activity undertaken and produce a regular newsletter.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

KLL is unique in that it is not just providing a one-off introduction to ballet. Working with LRBS, which provides the outreach performers, KLL delivers a continuous pathway for children either to weekly enjoyment of ballet or serious vocational Russian Ballet training.
