Project Phakama UK is running a training scheme for young people who are not in education, employment or training to gain the skills needed for employment in the creative and cultural industires.
Nov 2012 - Oct 2013
Project Phakama UK
The number of young unemployed has just passed one million nationally with approximately one in five young people and 50% of all young black 16-24 year olds out of work. New figures from Office of National Statistics (ONS) show London Borough of Tower Hamlets (LBTH), where Phakama is based, has the highest level of youth unemployment in London.
The creative and cultural industries are one of the fastest growing industries in the UK, but they lack diversity with 93% of employees being white.
Phakama is responding to this challenge by creating a new training scheme focusing on the creative and cultural industries, which we will pilot over the next three years. The programme will give young people the opportunity to learn about production, project management, communications, design, fundraising and light and sound. They will also undertake work placements and internships, as well as produce their own arts events, gaining an accreditation at the end of the course.
To equip young people with the skills needed to work in the creative and cultural industries.
Activities» We will run modules focussing on production, project management, communications, design, fundraising, light and sound.
Success will be for at least 5 trainees to find employment within the creative and cultural industries or to seek further training or access into higher education.
We will diversify the creative and cultural industries by giving young people, who would not usually have the opportunity to learn these skills, access to the knowledge to gain employment in their chosen profession. These young people will then be able to improve their current situations, as well as become advocates within their communities, inspiring other young people to make positive changes.
Some of the participants may drop out of the training programme. In order to prevent this, we are offering constant mentorship from Phakama's facilitators and young artists, as well as making the programme exciting, engaging and hands on.
Funders of this project will receive regular updates on the trainees' progress through invitations to events and by following their success on each trainee's blog.

London Borough of Tower Hamlets and its neighbouring areas are some of the most diverse communities in London, though they are also some of the most deprived. Unemployment figures for this borough are some of the highest in London.
The local area as a whole will benefit from having young people who are making positive choices in order to improve their lives, as well as having more diverse arts being lead by young people within diverse communities.
Phakama’s influence is far-reaching. Our approach transcends age, experience and culture and is driven by a common desire to make art fuelled by the diversity and difference of each individual. Since 1996, Phakama has worked with many hundreds young people from all over the world. Since moving to Queen Mary University in 2009, we have run a number of projects in the local area and have great relationships with local organisations and the University.
