The Success School
A course to raise the aspirations of 16-18 year-olds in London, Birmingham, Bristol, Northampton, Southampton and Hull through interaction with inspiring role-models and performance coaches. It is intended to increase participants' confidence and challenge the way they think about their future.
Our project is trying to solve the problem of lack of confidence and motivation among less advantaged young people and lack of strong role models in their lives. It is, we feel, unrealistic to expect young people to be engaged citizens if they lack the confidence and inspiration to cherish and work towards positive personal aspirations.
Less educationally advantaged/motivated young people will benefit directly from the inspiration of interacting with high-profile speakers with great stories. They will be given time and stimulation to reflect on where they want their lives to go, help with overcoming personal barriers to success and practical advice on the basic skills and working habits that will help them attain it. They will also benefit from signposting to other opportunities.

Activities» Sessions exploring the stories and advice of inspiring 'role-model' speakers from diverse fields
Analysis of questionnaires filled in before and after the course will indicate if participants are aiming higher as a result of the project.
To increase participants' confidence and motivation
Activities» Workshops with experienced performance coaches/self-help authors who will give practical advice on overcoming barriers to success and fulfilment.
Participants will rate their confidence and motivation before and after the programme; we will look for improved scores and examine comments.
To equip participants with practical skills for success such as time management and CV writing.
Activities» Practical sessions with Dialogue Society staff - participants will explore their understanding of 'success' and work on practical skills to attain it.
Success will be demonstrated by session questionnaires and an email survey checking whether participants have used their new skills since the course.
To equip participants with networking and oral expression skills.
Activities» Participants will be engaging with Speakers, Course Coordinators through Q and A and networking time.
Participants will be asked in questionnaires about whether they have gained any new social/oral expression skills or expanded their social network.
To instil a sense of active citizenship and belonging in their local neighbourhoods and communities.
Activities» Participants will complete course with a group heritage trip of their cities to instil a sense of belonging and encourage proactive citizenship.
Monitor the number of social action projects or community activities participants have participated or been involved in over a 24 month period and compare this to previous years.
By instilling a greater sense of empowerment and choice in less advantaged young people, the Success School may have a positive long term impact on their personal decisions. It may provide the confidence and perspective someone needs to embark on her ideal career path, to invest in higher education, or to adopt a leadership role in her local community. We will seek to demonstrate success in this area by conducting periodic email surveys of participants in the 24 months following the project.
There may be a mismatch between our aims and the teachers priorities. Teachers may want to prioritise bright students whereas we may want to target less advantaged students and those who need more motivation and encouragement. It is imperative to get teachers on board this project so that they can encourage their students to participate. We deal with this by having frank conversations with teachers from the start. We have built good working relationships with colleges in Hull and Southampton.
We will send donors reports outlining the sessions and content for each Success School organised followed by photos and videos. After each Success School we will disseminate full details of our project evaluation (based on questionnaires before and after the project and on follow-up email surveys).

The project will take place in six cities - in Southampton, Hull, Birmingham, Bristol, Northampton and at our Head office in Holloway, London. Areas identified as deprived with high unemployment and low attainment levels will be targeted as priority. Where possible Success schools will be delivered at local schools and colleges or at Dialogue Society offices. We have already delivered Success Schools in Wyke College, Southampton and Richard Taunton College, Hull.
The main beneficiaries of our project will be its participants - young people aged 16-19. We will work with colleges (Wyke College Southampton and Taunton College Hull) to ensure their less socially/educationally privileged students benefit. One of the Success Schools for which we are currently seeking funding will be based in Hull, which ranks among the 15 most deprived areas in England (Guardian datablog, Mar 2011). Our Birmingham and London Success Schools will work with students aged 16-19.
We have run eight successful Success Schools in four cities and bring the experience and detailed evaluation of these projects to the series planned for this coming academic year. We have good working relationships with partner colleges and local performance coaches.
Our other community and policy work brings us into contact with a range of potential speakers willing to volunteer their time.

Asuman will be the main Project Co-ordinator for Hull. She has successfully co-ordinated two Success School Programs in Hull.
