Community Programme

Poets go out into communtiy settings to work therapeutically with vulnerable people. We work through organisations such as MIND and doctors' surgeries to reach people.

  • Need


    To fill gaps created by shortfalls in funding by NHS and Social Services to work therapeutically with vulnerable people. To provide a life line for socially isolated people. To take the arts out to rural communities where there are no arts provision and little public transport.


    Creativity enhances quality of life and can lead to greater self esteem and self confidence.People with mental health issues in particular benefit through working with poets. Other groups are adults with learning disabilities, the chronically anxious and dementia sufferers. Part of our programme involves going out into isolated communities.

    To take poetry out to rurally isolated communities


    » By touring villages with poets who will set up on village greens and run workshops and readings

    Success will be the number of people who participate in these workshops.

    To work theapeutically with vulnerable people


    » To work through nursing homes, day centres, hospices etc reaching vulnerable people and writing poetry with them.

    What success will look like

    Success will be measured through through evaluations by participants about what they got out of the sessions.

    Aim 3

    To create a life line for socially isolated people


    » To set up workshops that are open to all in museums, day centres etc and tor run regular sessions for people.

    Success will be measured by the number of people who participate and evaluation forms about what they got out of the sessions.

  • Impact


    Long term changes will be a better quality of life for the participants which on a basic level can be a social outlet for them. Our dementia project where poets work on a one to one level with patients has been shown to increased patients' communication skills.


    Risks can be emotional outbursts by vulneable people. All our poets are highly experienced and CRB checked.


    Our funders receive a full report on the project and also an annual report.

    The project will take place in villages, day centres, nursing homes, colleges, throughout the West Midlands.


    Vulnerable people who are socially isolated and may have mental health issues, literacy problems or suffer from a disability.

    The Festival has been running a community programme for 15 years, has good contact with poets and organisations and has delivering many successful projects in partnership with funders etc.
