A new aerial production of Euripides' Medea
A bold new version of Euripides' masterpiece Medea, an archetypal tale of sexual jealously and revenge performed in a vigorous new translation. The production will explore Medea's supernatural powers and diminishing grip on reason by interweaving a physical and aerial dance dimension.
August 2016 - November 2016
Charity information: Actors Of Dionysus
There is, and has been for a long period, a decline in the teaching of and access to Classical Civilisation in state schools. We feel that this is a vital resource in the future development of young people today and that the preservation of this tradition is imperative. Greek drama is vital to the narrative of theatrical history and we would like to preserve this art form by producing exciting, visual, accessible, and surprisingly modern ancient Greek drama providing Classics for All.
We would like to develop and Nationally tour a highly physical and visually stunning new version of Medea, which incorporates a strong aerial dimension, exploring the Greek myth of female empowerment in a way that speaks directly to a modern audience. This innovative new version of Medea will provide access to state schools, engage new audiences, increase our profile, help to secure our longevity and increase overall accessibility to the Greek classics.
Nationally tour our new aerial dance version of Medea across the country in Autumn 2016
Activities» Spend a period of time rehearsing and re-developing Medea, working closely with our highly skilled group of artistic collaborators.
Success will come from taking Medea to wider audiences across the country and thereby increasing our profile and outreach and providing access to a top quality production
Increase our public engagement by involving more young people in theatre and educational workshops
Activities» Offer students access to our highly established Educational Outreach programme of workshops, talk backs and education material.
Success will be our ability to target deprived areas across the country and also undertake at least 20 educational workshops to students who would not normally have such access
International tour of Medea
Activities» Build relationships with new venues by introducing our work and taking a unique, top quality, dynamic and highly visual production to their venue
Success will come from attracting International delegates and producers to see Medea on tour, especially if we have a residency in London at the end of the run.
The project will reinvigorate the company's repertoire, as well as generating new audiences nationwide for the company's work. Through student participation we hope to revive an interest in classics in State schools and inspire young people to see our work. We will demonstrate the success of this project by monitoring the audience numbers and student participation. We will record any qualitative feedback that we we receive from the audience and also hold talk back sessions to gauge response
We could encounter problems in re-development of this project (especially the aerial dimension) but we have given ourselves sufficient time and space to allow for working out any potential issues. Finding the right collaborative team can also prove difficult but we have a lot of experience in researching, developing and creating a production and have safeguarding techniques, such as having other potential artists in mind & offering adequate health and safety procedures for the aerial dimension
We will have regular contact with donors to this project through email reports which will detail our activities and any changes that have been made to the project plans. We can also arrange meetings with donors when required.
