James Clerk Maxwell statue

All of today’s modern technology is founded upon the work of the scientist, James Clerk Maxwell. It was Maxwell’s emphasis on the basic role of fields of force that led Einstein to his general theory of relativity and the modern understanding of gravity. Generally regarded as the greatest physicist after Newton, there are surprisingly few memorials to Edinburgh-born Maxwell. The Royal Society of Edinburgh and its President, Sir Michael Atiyah are aiming to remedy this by creating a a bronze statue of Maxwell, produced by the sculptor Alexander Stoddart. Designed to be entirely in-keeping with the existing, classical monuments in this UNESCO world heritage site, the statue has received widespread support locally and from around the world. Showing Maxwell seated, and dressed in costume of his time, the statue will be the first new monument to grace George Street in over a century.
