Out & About Scheme
Out & About has been running for 10 years and gives adults with learning disabilities the opportunity to take part in mainstream leisure activities with support from volunteers. Out & About delivers a wide variety of social activities including bowling, snooker, walking & meals out.
Social exclusion in adults with learning disabilities. Out & About is very popular with both members and carers and has huge benefits for its members: Given this opportunity to take part in mainstream activities in a safe and nurturing environment our members truly relish the experience! Through participating in a variety of different fulfilling and sometimes challenging experiences they are able to develop their self-confidence, social and communication skills.
Here is an example of how our members benefit from the O&A Scheme: Billy has been a member of the scheme for 3 years. He has a chaotic home-life and consequently misses out on most opportunities. He attends 2 Out & About groups a month which gives him something to look forward to and gives his sister a break from caring. He particularly loves the Walking Group, wears a huge smile all day and also benefits from the exercise. Without O&A Billy would simply not be able to join in these activities.
To provide leisure activities for adults with learning disabilities.
Activities» We will provide a range of different activities for our members to take part in in twice monthly meetings.
Success will be the continuation of our groups and happy, challenged and fulfilled members.
To provide respite for family carers.
Activities» Whilst their loved one is attending O&A, the families get a much-needed break from the very stressful role of caring full-time.
Success will be providing family carers with respite, whilst knowing that their loved one is safe and happy.
In the long term O&A allows its members to develop close friendships with like-minded people. They also develop self-confidence and better communications skills as well as enjoying the opportunities presented to them.
