Project Sonrisa runs three dental clinics where underprivileged children living in the slum areas of Buenos Aires can receive free restorative care and oral hygiene . The project fills a critical gap in the underfunded public health system where only extractions are available for poor children.
The project is ongoing since October 2006
Charity information: Todos Juntos Childrens Trust
In Argentina traditional treatment of oral diseases is costly and families of low income have little to no access to dental care. Although Argentina offers free health services the absence of government investment in restorative dental care and oral hygiene together with poor nutrition is leading to serious oral health complications in children within the slum communities of Buenos Aires. An estimated 90 per cent of all children living in the slums suffer from tooth decay.
Todos Juntos has set up and funds three (Project Sonrisa) dental clinics where free restorative care and oral hygiene sessions are provided all year round to underprivileged children and adolescents living in the surrounding slums.
To offer free restorative dental care to children living in the slums of Buenos Aires
Activities» Continue with fundraising events, grant applications and the search for new private donors
Success will be increasing our number of patients treated each year . From approximately 400 in 2066 we hope to reach over 7000 children in 2012 and more in 2013.
The project will reverse the effects of long term tooth decay in children in these slum areas by providing restorative care and hygiene. Children no longer have extractions as their only option to decay and have also learnt the simple rules of dental hygiene All our patients have free access to toothbrushes and toothpaste all year round . Once a child enters the project he/she will have dental care until the age of 18 and succes will be an increase in number of patients treated each year
Our greatest risk right now is uncontrolled inflation. With Argentina rated second highest in the world when it comes to inflation our costs have doubled in the last 12 months and this is can only be dealt with by raising more and more funds to maintain our work .
Reports are made available to all donors requesting one . Annual statistics (number of treatments/patients per year per clinic/toothbrushes and toothpaste distributed etc ) together with annual audited accounts are provided with a brief summary of other activities and events during the year .

Our clinics are situated outside the slum areas of San Martin, Buenos Aires, Argentina The estimated population of the slums is 130 000 people of which 40 per cent are children.
Children and adolescents from these slum areas from extremely low income families who currently have no access to restorative dental care . To date we are the only ones in Argentina offering this service.
We have successfully treated thousands of children over the past years and are still to date the only charity in Argentina offering this service to slum children because we are set up in the government health centers where children are within walking distance from our clinics and can easily access free care at any time during the year . We work to promote oral hygiene in the surrounding schools and kindergartens. around our clinics
