Community Computer Project

To enable adults with a learning disability and their carers, access to and support with information technology. Concentrating on iPads (touchscreen tablet), but also using iMacs or users PCs.

The project covers Internet searching, music, photography, film, employment, communication, art, health.

We hope for the project to be ongoing.

  • Need

    Need

    Exclusion: Access to information, social communication and services are becoming increasingly Internet based. Without support, access to the Internet is difficult for many people with a learning disability and elderly Carers.
    Communication Problems: Some adults with a learning disability, also have speech and language difficulties. This can cause social and practical problems for the individual.
    Support Needs: The project offers the ability to support individuals to explore their creativity.

    Solution

    The project offers one-to-one support to individuals to improve their skills. Use of iPads can be a more accessible way for adults with a learning disability and elderly carers to access computers.

    With the use of communication apps, we can aid people with communication problems.

    Art, music and exploring of hobbies can all be empowering for individuals.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    Enabling individuals to access information and services through the Internet.

    Activities

    » Individuals will be supported on a one-to-one basis to improve their skills. Using an iPad and apps, will be more accessible for many.

    Sessions will be logged and outcomes shared amongst people involved. We will look for continued progress with independent skills and put strategies in place for the future.

    To assist people with communication problems.

    Activities

    » With the use of apps, such as Makaton's MyChoicePad, we can assist people with communication problems through speech-generating and signs.

    Aim 3

    To explore and assist people in exploring their creativity.

    Activities

    » Using apps such as Brushes on the iPad, to create original artwork and share through email, social networking and exhibiting.

    Aim 4

    To assist people with social contact with family and friends.

    Activities

    » Using the iPad to call family abroad on Skype, assisting with Facebook and email.

    Sessions will be logged and outcomes shared amongst people involved. We will look for continued progress with independent skills and put strategies in place for the future.


    Aim 5

    To offer a loan service for people to borrow iPads.

    » We hope to gain funding to purchase more iPads and to receive donated iPads to set-up a library service.

  • Impact

    This may involve follow-up sessions in the future. Assisting with purchasing of equipment. liaising with and training of people involved in the day-to-day support of individuals.

    We will continue to log and share information about the work done by the project.

    Risk

    Encourage and support individuals to use good practise on social networking sites to limit the risk of online contact from strangers.

    Individuals support needs will be considered, when decided where to meet and if any additional support is needed.

    Reporting

    Through information posted on our website and Facebook page. We will contact individual donors by email if they would like further information to how their donation was used.

  • Background

    Location

    Based in the London borough of Lambeth, but open to the surrounding boroughs and central London.

    A single one-to-one session and continued phone and email support are available to people in other areas of London.

    Beneficiaries

    All adults with a learning disability in London and the carers of adults and children with a learning disability.

    We have been running the project since January 2012 and have had great success so far.

    The experience has allowed us to identify further needs and how best to bring the project forward.

    Jamie Ralston

    An experienced Support Worker, managing the overall running of the project and leading the one-to-one sessions in the community on the iPad.

    Lambeth Mencap's Admin Officer, technically skilled in IT. Helping with the management of the project and taking the lead with Carers.
