Leratong Preschool Project
Based in the heart of Alexandra Township, Leratong is run by Peggy Chauke. Providing nursery education and daycare for almost 200 children, many of whom are orphaned through AIDS and living in extreme poverty. Leratong is a sanctuary where children can play and learn in safety.
Leratong is a permanent project requiring long term support.
The Gumboots Foundation (UK)
Leratong provides orphaned children and those from extremely disadvantaged backgrounds, with nursery education and day care.
Without adequate housing, and in some cases no adult supervision, these small children would otherwise be exposed to all the dangers on the township streets. Leratong gives them a chance to be children and g a start with their pre-school education.
The project requires ongoing funding as many families are unable to afford even basic fees to cover essential costs. Leratong does not receive state funding and relies on charitable donations. Gumboots UK supports the project with funds for teachers salaries, and basic running costs.
To provide young children with nursery education and day care
Activities» Fundraise to help Leratong cover its essential running costs.
Success will be enabling the project to continue providing day care and pre-school education for up to 200 children.
By providing a daily place of safety where children are fed and cared for, removed from the harsh reality of their lives, they have a chance to be children and learn through play. Without this early intervention these children are less likely to achieve their potential once they start primary school.
As with all charitable organisations the lack of funding is a risk. We have secured a long term corporate donor to specifically fund most of the essential project running costs. Leratong is not solely reliant on Gumboots UK's support. The project leader Peggy Chauke is effective at getting donations of food, materials and equipment and at raising funds locally.
Gumboots UK and its partner organisation Gumboots SA produce a regular newsletter which is distributed to all our donors 3 times a year.
We also use our website and social media sites to keep donors informed.

Leratong is based in Alexandra Township in Johannesburg one of the city's poorest areas. Characterised by overcrowding, poor housing, inadequate schools, high crime and teenage pregnancy, it is a tough
place for children to grow up. Overlayed on all these problems is the impact of AIDS which has blighted the lives of countless families. Leaving households without an income and orphaned children in the care of ageing grandmothers and siblings.
Young children and families living in Alexandra Township an extremely deprived area of Johannesburg. An infrastructure originally design for a population of 70,000, with figures now estimated at between 180,000 and 750,000 Alex as it is know locally, has attracted migrants seeking a better life from all over Africa
