'Qudz' at The Yard Theatre

The Yard Theatre wishes to create a new production about the recent history of Iraq - 'Qudz'.

The show is based on documentary research and first-hand accounts garnered by interviewing Iraqis.

The play is also a very loose adaptation of Conrad's Heart of Darkness, but in an Arabic setting.

    'Qudz' seeks to delve beneath the headlines and examine the every-day dilemmas facing ordinary Iraqis through the tumultuous period. of the country's transition from Saddam to American governance, to the recent elections. This show is particularly important at a time when the world’s media attention has started to shift its focus to other countries in the Middle East - but where the historical lessons and the ongoing difficulties facing Iraqis are more relevant than ever.

    Solution

    The Yard Theatre will develop this new, ambitious, exciting production to explore the issues and generate new discussions in the press.

    'Qudz' is a collaboration of highly experienced and skilled multi-national creative artists. The project is led by Tarek iskander, Associate Artistic Director of The Yard Theatre.

    Qudz will run for three weeks from October to November 2012 - as expected to garner significant press interest due to the subject matter and the profile of the theatre.

    Aim 1

    To develop a new theatrical production that engages with modern concerns in Iraq and the Middle East

    Activities

    » Present a show in October 2012 that specifically deals with these issues, in an innovative, challenging and entertaining way.

    Success will be...attracting over 1000 audience members to the production of its three week run, and receiving wide-ranging press coverage for the show.


    Aim 2

    To improve the store of documentary evidence relating to the recent history of Iraq.

    Activities

    » Conduct an extensive series of interviews with Iraqis and academic experts to develop a broader historical perspective on recent events.

    Success will be...publishing online the stories and feedback of interviews with Iraqis and relevant academics.


    Aim 3

    To develop theatrical work that is of specific interest to the Arabic community in the UK.,

    Activities

    » The production will be energetically marketed to Arabic communities in London and will address in an objective way issues that interest them.

    Success will be...attracting over 300 audience members from Arabic communities in the UK to see the show.


    Aim 4

    To broaden knowledge and understanding of international issues for local communities in East London.

    Activities

    » The Creative team will run a number of workshops with local community groups to develop their skills and understanding of international issues.

    Success will be...doing 2 workshops with local community groups in Tower Hamlets and Hackney to develop their skills and understanding of Middle Eastern issues.


  • Impact

    Impact

    The project will be in important theatrical milestone in presenting Middle Eastern issues on stage. It will complement other recent theatrical endeavours to help establish London as the foremost theatrical city for presenting work that engages directly with political issues from that part of the world.

    Risk

    The main risk to the project is financial. Hence The Yard has set up an energetic fundraising campaign to attempt to raise the required capital via trusts, foundations and individual donors.

    Reporting

    Donors will be sent an evaluation report, that will monitor the success of the project against its stated aims.

    Location

    The Yard Theatre is based 2 minutes from Hackney Wick Station.

    Beneficiaries

    Beneficiaries will include the 30+ participating artists and the 1000+ audience members. In addition the company will do skills workshop with marginalised groups from the local communities. Press and marketing will further raise awareness of the political issues to a much wider audience.

    Why Us?

    The Yard opened in 2011 in a disused warehouse in Hackney Wick, and was partly built using recycled materials from the Olympic Park. It has quickly become the most exciting new additions to the London theatre scene, with a superb reputation for its cutting-edge unique work.

    The Yard Theatre offers audiences a remarkable opportunity to experience unique theatre. Tickets never exceed £9 for a show.

    The Yard was recently appointed as the affiliate venue of the National Theatre Studio.
