Association for Research in Infant and Child Development
Young children with developmental difficulties need expert diagnosis as early as possible. For this, modern standardised scales of development are needed.
The Griffiths Mental Development Scales are used in many countries but require updating and re-standardisation so that they may be used for diagnosis.
To remove old fashioned items from the scale and replace with contemporary test items.
Activities» A small core group of experts within the developmental field will give their time free to this work to prepare a blueprint
Success will be.confirmation by users of the scale that the changes are helpful.
Check with a range of experts in child development that these new test items are valid.
Activities» Consultation with representative users of the current test regarding the new items and planned deletions. Individual experts will each lead sub scale.
Success will be confirmation of validity by experts in the field.
Conduct statistical analysis and comparison with data from the last re-standardisation.
Activities» Professor of Psychology in Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University South Africa will lead appropriate statistical analysis using research assistants.
Success will be.accurate data demonstarting children's developmental progress.
Children with disability across the world will have early and correct diagnosis of their developmental problems so that appropriate help may be given. The Scales are already sold in a number of countries and languages. A rise in sales (royalties are returned to the charity) will demonstrate that the work has given disabled children earlier diagnoses.
The major risk is that the charity will run out of funds before the work is finished. The experts give their time freely but the work requires some paid input and professional academic research leadership. Financial support is also needed for necessary travel, accommodation etc. Virtual meetings are held wherever possible but one workshop over several days is needed.
Since the project is short, by a final report to donors unless a different option is requested
