Food for Education

Every day, The Akshaya Patra Foundation feeds 1.6 million underprivileged children across India by providing them with a free school lunch.

Just £10 will feed a child for a full year, helping them to stay in education and giving them the best possible chance to escape from poverty.

  • Need

We believe no child should be denied an education because of hunger and aim to feed 5 million children by 2020.

An educated child can bring 4 members of their family out of poverty, but in India one in four school-aged children are not in school - many have to support themselves and their families through work or begging.

Malnutrition is more common in India than anywhere else in the world, and as well as the health consequences, stops children learning effectively if they are in school.

Akshaya Patra breaks down the barrier of hunger to education.

By providing one guaranteed meal every day we motivate families to send their children to school, keep them in education and give them the nutrients they need to learn effectively. We now feed 1.6 million children every day across 11 states in India.

We only work in government schools to ensure we reach the most disadvantaged children, and we work in partnership with the Indian Government who matches any donations made to us.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

We aim to continue our school meals programme, feeding at least 1.6 million children every day.

» Akshaya Patra produce meals in kitchens across India, which are then transferred by customised vehicles to schools in a 25km radius.

Our vision is an India where no child is denied an education because of hunger, and our ambition is to feed 5 million children across India by 2020

  • Impact

Our meals help Indian children access education.

Independent studies show our school meals programme increases school attendance rates, improves child health, enhances concentration levels when in the classroom and breaks down social barriers such as gender and caste when children sit together to share meals.

By breaking down barriers to education, we help children reach their full potential and become the active Indian citizens of the future.

We rely on our donors to help us feed over 1.6 million disadvantaged children in India every day.

We have made our kitchens as efficient as possible and these economies of scale in combination with our government support for food costs, means that we can leverage every £1 donated to us and it costs just £10 to feed a child for a whole school year.

In the UK, we have funding that covers our administration costs meaning that 100% of your donation will directly feed children in India.

All of our donors will receive our e-newsletter with stories of the children, families and schools we support.

For donors sponsoring a school (£2,500), we will send you details of the school you have sponsored, install a plaque acknowledging your donation and send you an annual report.

  • Background

Since our inception in 2000, The Akshaya Patra Foundation has grown from feeding 1,500 children in Bangalore, to feeding 1.6 million children in 11 states in India.

Meals are produced in one of our 26 centralised kitchens across India, each feeding up to 150,000 children daily, or decentralised kitchens which are much smaller, in harder to reach rural areas and run by Self-Help Groups (SHGs) who undertake the cooking process under the guidance of Akshaya Patra.

We help children aged between 6 and 16 across India by providing them with a free school lunch every day.

We only work in government funded schools to ensure we reach the most disadvantaged children and for one in four of the children we help, their Akshaya Patra lunch is their only meal of the day.
