  • Need

    Need

57 million children in India are malnourished and of these, 40% do not go to school because they have to support themselves and their families through taking menial jobs or begging.

Every day, The Akshaya Patra Foundation feeds over 1.3 million children living in poverty in India by providing them with a hot, nutritious lunch at school. Our meals give the poorest families an incentive to keep their children in education, giving them the best possible chance to escape the cycle of poverty.

    Solution

Akshaya Patra meals are produced in one of our 18 centralised kitchens across India, each feeding 100,000- 150,000 children daily, or our decentralised kitchens which are much smaller, typically in harder to reach rural areas and run by the local community.

Our Blue Buses are the cornerstone of our distribution network for food from our centralised kitchens, ensuring our meals adhere to strict hygiene regulations and remain hot and delicious on their journey from the kitchen to each school.

  • Impact

    Impact

Our vision is an India where no child is denied an education because of hunger and our ambition is to feed 5 million children across India by 2020.

We want to help underprivileged children stay in education and reach their full potential; giving them the chance to escape from poverty and become the active Indian citizens of the future.

    Risk

We avoid risks including food not reaching schools on time, theft & vehicle breakdown.

    - Vehicles have regular maintenance
    - The kitchen day starts at 2AM with Buses leaving no later than 10AM
    - Buses are customised with racks to avoid spillage, and heat insulation to ensure the food stays hot and hygienic.
    - 2 assistants accompany each vehicle to deter theft
    - Buses serve schools within a 25km of each kitchen, routes are plotted in advance to ensure they are as efficient as possible

    Reporting

Funders of a Blue Bus will receive a photo of their bus, details of the kitchen it belongs to and the schools it services and an annual update on its activity.
We can brand the bus with a company logo where relevant, and arrange visits to the kitchens and schools in India where your bus operates.

  • Background

    Location

We are currently seeking funding for Blue Buses for our Bangalore kitchens.

Bangalore is where The Akshaya Patra Foundation's story began. In 2000 we started off feeding 1,500 children in the city when our founder was moved by the sight of children fighting a dog over scraps of food.

Akshaya Patra now have two centralised kitchens serving Bangalore and its suburbs, reaching 300,000 underprivileged children every day.

    Beneficiaries

We help children aged between 6 and 16 across India by providing them with a free school lunch every day.

We only work in government funded schools to ensure we reach the most disadvantaged children and for one in four of the children we help, their Akshaya Patra lunch is their only meal of the day.
