Rapid Response Fund; help where it's needed most

Your donation will enable MapAction's skilled volunteers to deploy to a humanitarian emergency within hours of an alert.

Working at the scene of the disaster, they will map the needs of survivors and help coordinate the delivery of aid, so lives can be saved and suffering minimised.

    When a disaster strikes, the entire landscape can be transformed. The challenge for responders is to know where to start.

    Aid agencies quickly need to establish “where”:
    - Which areas have been affected?
    - Where are the people in most urgent need?
    - How can you best reach them?

    Every second counts in the race to save lives, making it vitally important to share this information quickly and in formats that are easy to understand.


    MapAction deploys skilled volunteers to the scene of a disaster to map the needs of survivors.

    In the early phase of a response, our maps help coordinate search-and-rescue efforts and emergency aid delivery. In the recovery phase, they help responders meet the ongoing needs of survivors, who may be living in overcrowded displacement camps with little or no sanitation and vulnerable to disease outbreaks.

    Deploy volunteers immediately to sudden onset disasters to help save lives and minimise suffering


    » Train volunteers for the realities they will face in the field, including scenario simulations and security training
    » Purchase and maintain technical equipment (such as laptops, printers and GPS units) so we know that it won't let us down when we need it most
    » Provide appropriate medical support for our volunteers so they can deploy quickly and safely to the field (anti-malarial treatment, vaccinations etc)

    What success will look like

    Success will be our ability to deploy a highly-skilled and appropriately-equipped volunteer team within hours of an alert so they can deliver our emergency mapping service

  • Impact


    Our emergency mapping service will make the delivery of humanitarian aid as efficient and effective as possible. This will be measured by:
    - the number of emergencies we respond to
    - the number of maps we make available to responders
    - number of humanitarian users of our information
    - the feedback from humanitarian partners on the impact of our service


    The main risk is that we cannot predict when a disaster will strike, so we cannot predict when our service will be required. However, experts are predicting that the world is becoming increasingly unstable and this will make more people vulnerable to humanitarian emergencies, particularly conflict-related crises. MapAction is experiencing increasing demands on our service, so we need to be ready to respond and help save more lives.


    Donors will be informed as soon as we deploy to a humanitarian emergency, so they have a finger on the pulse of our activities.

    They will also receive a six-monthly newsletter that brings together our activities and achievements over the previous six months.

    MapAction will deploy its skilled volunteers wherever our service is needed in the world. We typically deploy to developing countries (Africa, Asia, Latin America and Caribbean) where people are most vulnerable to impact of disasters and high-level mapping skills are not readily available in-country.


    The direct beneficiaries of our emergency mapping service will be humanitarian responders to disasters. Our mapped information will help them understand the needs of survivors, so they can use their resources as efficiently and effectively as possible.

    The ultimate beneficiaries of our emergency mapping service are people who have been affected by disasters. Our mapped information will help get the aid they need delivered to them as quickly as possible.
