Improving education infrastructure in rural Nepal
We are developing education in the Helambu region of Nepal, 70 miles from Kathmandu. Here local schools are small, crowded, and under-resourced. We are providing a better learning environment for these children with equipment and materials, better trained teachers and new school buildings.
Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world with a GNI of £279 per head. It lies in 157th place (out of 187) in the UN Development Index. The remote Helambu region where we work is often neglected by government and tourism. The standard of education in these villages is very poor. In a Needs Analysis in 2009, we found classrooms were often inadequate and there was a lack of effective teachers, books, music and sports equipment. There is also a reluctance to send girls to school.
We have been working to improve this situation with our local partner, HELP Nepal, in 15 villages, and have built new classrooms, employed better qualified teachers, set up libraries and provided music and sports equipment. Already we have seen an increase in pupils of 34% in two years largely through an increase of 40% in girls’ enrolment.

As well as the 2850 children who benefit directly, 10,000 parents and others living in the region will use the new school facilities, and will benefit from having more educated young people with the skills needed to support their families in adulthood. The children’s children will also benefit! It has been shown that children of educated parents are less likely to end up malnourished, with related health problems, or as child labourers.
Access to these remote villages can be difficult. Many don't have any road access. The only way to overcome this is to get local people to carry materials to the village where necessary. Local people have been essential in carrying out the work.
HELP staff take photos, note the progress of the works and report to the Foundation every 3 months. Foundation 'Ambassadors' and one Trustee visit every year.We monitor levels of enrolment and attendance, the motivation and commitment of the teaching staff and involvement of community.

Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world and the Helambu region 70 kms north-east of Kathmandu is often forgotten by both government and the tourist industry. We have worked in the region since 1990. Our current programme is managed by Jimmy Lama who went to the original school we worked in and then went on to secondary school and University. Jimmy came from a poor family where education was virtually unknown. Often girls in this region are sold to the sex trade in India.
2850, will benefit directly, being the 850 primary school age children currently at these 5 schools and the 200 new children who will enter these schools each year over the next ten years. Indirect beneficiaries will include: 10,000 parents and others living in the region who will use the new school facilities and will benefit from having more educated young people with the skills needed to support their families in adulthood. Long term children of educated parents have much better prospects
We have worked in this region since 1990 so know it extremely well. Our Manager comes from this area. This alongside the formation of the local group, HELP means that local people are instrumental throughout the development and implementation of the project. We are a small charity with low overheads. This combined with local people providing the labour required means that the money goes a long way and fairly small amounts can have a large impact.
