Better Beginnings:125 years of caring for children
To celebrate our 125 years of care, Cabrini aim to grow our valuable services for children, adopters and birth families throughout the adoption process. We're also developing our neighbourhood projects pre and after school clubs and subsidised nursery places, helping working parents on low incomes.
Charity information: Cabrini Children's Society
As a voluntary adoption agency our funding is increasingly vulnerable. Donations would provide stability to the services we provide to children, foster carers, adopters and birth families. With your contributions we could increase adopters, opening up the potential for more people to provide a stable, loving home and help more vulnerable children waiting in the care system. We can also help children to access nursery places who otherwise might not have day care due to parent's low incomes.
This project will reduce the numbers of children going back into the care system. Cabrini has one of the lowest disruption rates in the UK - 6% compared to 20% nationally - and we aim to maintain this level of service, which in turn helps reduce the tax burden of supporting care home places. We can also offer affordable breakfast, nursery and after school clubs to parents who otherwise couldn't afford child care, providing young children with engaging activities, like learning healthy eating.
Ensure there is a low disruption rate for children being adopted / fostered from the care system
Activities» Facilitate training programmes, counselling and support for adoptive parents, adoptees, birth parents, children and foster care parents.
Success will be measured by looking at comparative data on disruption rates, we would wish for our rate to be well under the national average of 20%.
To support parents stay in work by providing top-up bursaries for nursery / childcare places.
Activities» Sponsor nursery places for parents on low paid work, by low income earners – Nursery Bursaries / Sponsoring Nursery and Child care placements.
Success will be measured by the take-up of the bursaries and number of parents staying in work, rather than being better off on benefits or unable to afford any childcare.
To prevent children going to school hungry and children as young as five walking on their own.
Activities» Provide breakfast / after schools and extended provision for children (of low paid working and unemployed parents) who have to work.
Success will be measured by the number of children from low paid or unemployed parents being able to take up extended school provision, along with workshops/certificates attained.
This project will enable Cabrini to help minimise the disruption children can experience in care whilst waiting to be fostered or adopted, like reducing the likihood of children returning back into care or being passed around different carers. We will demonstrate this by providing life-long post adoption care and long term foster care.
For our neighbourhood projects, we will record annually the number of parents being able to remain in work by taking advantage of our nursery bursaries.
Out of over 60,000 children currently in care in the UK, Cabrini have approximately 7,000 children in our region waiting to be adopted. Cabrini also receive a high level of enquiries about affordable nursery care, so we envisage optimal take up for this project. We will deal with the risks by closing monitoring the projects and their take up.
We maintain records of our service provision and beneficiaries and send monthly email bulletins to supporters. Cabrini also produce a bi-annual magazine with more in-depth information about the progress of our projects.

Our two neighbourhood projects include nursery and childcare centres, which are located in Southwark (Livesey ward) and Lambeth (Vauxhall). Both of these centres support communities who experience deprivation and high unemployment. Our OFSTED Outstanding adoption and post adoption services primarily cover London and Home Counties, including Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire and West Sussex.
Children in care will benefit from being adopted. Statistics show that of the 60,000+ children that are in care, 40% will develop mental illness in later life and 20% will end up in prison. These vulnerable children gain a much better start in life if provided with a stable, loving family.
Low income parents benefit from their children developing in a safe, nurturing environment whilst enabling them to remain in work.
Since 1887 Cabrini has transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people through our range of innovative services, including OFSTED Outstanding adoption and foster care services putting us in the top 5% of providers. We also have enhanced NACCC accreditation through our Southwark hub childcare centre. We have extensive expertise and knowledge with many of our professional staff working for Cabrini for over 15 years.
