From London to Bombay

We will take young people in Britain over to India to learn more about both development and its practical implications, whilst also learning key skills for employability - including teamworking, leadership and problem-solving.
They will give back to their community through teaching and project work

    Two separate problems:

    1 - the knowledge, skillset and employability of young people in Britain

    2 - tackling social deprivation and buidling strong communities in the developing world


    Through a strong programme of training and experiential learning both in the UK and in practical placements within India for young Brits, helping them to broaden their horizons, teach them new subject matter and provide an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for them.

    Equally, their skills and commitment to the placement will give back to the local communities within India enormously. Helping them build stronger communities through local project work and development of infrastructure.

    Deliver local, community-focussed, positive social change for people in the developing world.


    » By creating the space for young Brits to innovate within these impoverished communities giving them the tools to make the change local people need.

    Better employability prospects for young people - measured through surveys and case studies, and track record

    Skills audit of volunteers - before and after analysis (longitudinal approach)

    Stronger infrastructure in place for community partners - physical analysis of space / community organisation


    Health and safety concerns are paramount with this project, which is why we will have a full-time volunteer coordinator in place in India at all times during this project's duration. They will be well-trained and experienced to tackle a range of travel / language / financial and experential concerns that volunteers might have.

    Logistically this project is a challenge, but Development in Action has coordinated projects like this over a successful track record in the last 20 years.


    Through a range of methods:

    -research metrics: case studies, survey data and logbook / diary recordings.
    -full report on all activity taken place, produced by full-time India-based volunteer
    -'learning & reflection' workshop - feeding into a full film presentation to donors of the placements

  • Background


    The project will be located in both London and India, across a vareity of placement locations.

    Training will occur in the centre of the Capital, with placements taking place oversees throughout the 2-5 month period.


    Young people from Britain - chosen on the basis of interest in Development issues and a willingness to travel and make a difference to people's lives.

    Local communities within the placement locations in India. These areas will typically be deprived and in need of hands-on support from dedicated volunteers - which we are experts at finding and matching.

    We have 20 years experience of coordinating similar placement schemes, but this is an ambitious development, with a more tailored offering for both our young people & the local communities in which we will work in India.

    We have strong contacts for these placements within India, excellent networks for attracting volunteers and a tried and tested training method.

    We are introducing a detailed framework for research and evaluation, to ensure that what we do is rooted in the state of the art.

    IVC (India Volunteer Coordinator) - To Be Appointed

    This person (about to be appointed) will coordinate volunteers in India & ensure that the project runs smoothly. They will have strong experience.

    Anna Burton

    The Chair of the volunteer committee who leads a range of experienced volunteers who have undertaken placements previously in supporting the project.

    Joanna Taylor

    The Operations manager, who will manage the training arrangements and those for the placements in India. A hard-working 'doer'.
