Safe water for the Kabanana Orphans
The Safe Water Project will supply year round safe water to Kabanana Care Project that cares for orphans and needy adults in this impoverished Zambian community.
Estimated two weeks
Charity information: Kabanana Care (Zambia) Trust
Local water supplies are expensive and dry up at times during the dry season. They are also prone to pollution from water run-off containing contaminants such as fertilizer and effluent during the wet season.
The drilling of a deep bore hole will supply reliable year round safe water which is safe from contamination. This will also provide a vital resource to the surrounding community who will be allowed to obtain supplies from the bore hole.
Commission local contractors to drill a deep bore and install the associated infrastructure.
Activities» Liaise with Zambian based representative of American charity UNForgotten, who are prepared to partner this project and oversee the drilling process.
» Raise necessary funding by approaching existing donor base for additional contributions as required.
Success will be firm quotation agreed with contractor and project start date fixed.
Significant health benefits will accrue from year round access to safe water that should reduce the incidence of disease. Additionally, there will be a financial benefit to the child care project who will be able to cease paying for water as at present.
The main risk is that drilling in the site selected will not strike a suitable water source. This will be dealt with by allowing extra contingency funds in the budget to facilitate further bores being drilled until successful.
Quarterly newsletters are issued to donors and these will fully inform with regard to progress with the project. In addition interim updates will be supplied if any major issues or necessary changes arise.

Kabanana is a desperately poor community situated approximately 10Km from Lusaka which is the capital of Zambia. The majority of the populace live below the poverty line and scratch an existence from farming smallholdings. The Kabanana Care project was set up with some local assistance initially from the Catholic Church and seeks to care for around 180 orphans who have seen their parents die due to mainly either HIV/Aids or TB. Assistance is also offered to needy adults in the community.
Main beneficiaries will be the orphans being cared for by the care project but the surrounding community will also be allowed to benefit from the new reliable safe water source.
We are dealing directly with the local care workers and have an excellent working relationship with them, particularly the local project head who is a lady of substantial integrity. The link we have formed with the American charity UNForgotten, has added local expertise in similar projects to our range of skills in the area.
