Residential Breaks for adults with Disabilities

Yellow Submarine's project idea is to provide two residential breaks for adults with learning disabilities. For a group which are commonly isolated and stuck at home, these residential breaks will encourage independance, build confidence and allow friendships to blossom.

  • Need


    It is widely recognised that peopel with learning disabilities face often insurmountable barriers to being involved in thier local community, make friends and access social activities.
    There is also a huge need for respite breaks, to enable carers to have a much deserved rest.
    The challenge we face is that those families who most need our respite services typically are often least able to afford it.


    This work we are seeking funding for is an extension of a project that over the last year has supported 50 people with learning disabilities go on residential breaks, enabling 5500 hours of respite. We pick up each individual from their home and provide not only all their care needs but also a hugely positive and enriching experience.

    We have established that our project is in high demand and achievable. We have put the hard work in and foundations down to create a sustainable project.

    To enable adults with learning disabilities to go on holiday independently.


    » To run two residential breaks of five days each, allowing a total of 10 people to go on holiday.

    What success will look like

    Success will be positive feedback from holidayers that the holiday has been interesting, supportive and relaxing. At least 8 out of 10 holidayers will report two positive outcome

    To provide invaluable respite for the families and carers of the people we take away.

    What success will look like

    Success will be positive feedback from parents and carers that the respite has benefited their health and well-being, and a willingness to recommend the breaks to others.

  • Impact


    Our organisation experiences an almost 100% repeat rate for holidays. We currently have waiting lists for some holidays, and we anticipate that funding will allow us to meet more need.
    In the long term we expect our holidays to provide families with regular, dependable breaks that will prevent the stress, family breakdown and poverty that is often associated with caring responsibilities. We would demonstrate this through repeat users, increased referrals and an increase in clients


    We experience the ongoing risk of a lack of funding, and we address this by fundraising widely and in many formats to ensure an adequate flow of revenue. We apply to grant giving bodies as well as fundraising ativities such as cinema screenings and marathon running.
    We use a high proportion of volunteer staff, including nurses and care workers, to keep our costs low. We always find ways to do what we want to do for free or as little as possible.


    We provide holiday reports to all funders, giving non-identifying details of the person or people that they have supported to access our breaks.
    These reports detail the holiday itself, the make-up of the group and the feedback gained from the holidayer and their family about the service.

  • Background


    The two holidays will take place in a location decided by the holidayers. This is to ensure our services are person-centred. Locations are usually but not always in the South East and South West, but have gone as far as Blackpool, Scotland and France.


    Oxfordshire is knows to have great disparity between the richest and poorest people living here. With day services being cut those with learnign disabiltiies are finding themselves less supported and more likely to be stuck at home. Mencap's report "Stuck at Home" (2012) highlights this.
    We hope to reach 10 people through these residential breaks, giving them the opportunity to make friends and create networks in their local communities.

    Why Us?

    Yellow Submarine works across West Oxfordshire to provide a service for adults which is not replicated within this geographical area. We are very good value for money, and fundraise for families that cannot afford to pay for such a service. We provide a door-to-door service which families tell us helps them enormously and we give opportunities to local people and service users to volunteer with us, building skills and encouraging social action.

    I am the Deputy Manager at Yellow Submarine Respite Holidays. I run the majority of hoildays from our base in Oxford.

    Toby Staveley

    Toby is the General Manager at Yellow Submarine, who oversees all our serivces and fundraises to support them.


    We rely heavily on volunteers and they assist us in all areas.
