Outdoor education for young people

The Nights Away Challenge will feature young people aged 6 to 14. The project will work to move the 6 to 10 year olds away from sleepovers indoors to sleepovers outdoors. Young people will discover a whole new world of adventure.

  • Need

There is a strong tradition in the Scout Group for young people in the Beaver Scouts and Cub Scouts to experience residential experiences by having sleepovers in the Scout Headquarters. Whilst these are great events they miss out on full outdoor education that can be achieved in a camping environment.

The Scout Group will stage 3 camping experiences for the Beaver scouts and Cub Scouts. These will be based at different times of the year and at different locations. To achieve this we will upgrade the camping equipment to include new light weight mess tents and sleping accommodation. This will enable 40 young people to camp at each residential experience. New campsite locations will mean new adventures for young people.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Stage a residential experience that is based outdoors at a camp site.

» Run the outdoor experience at Pigdon campsite in the Spring of 2014. All young people to achieve a nights away badge.

Success will be 95% of young people experiencing a outdoor camping experience and receiving feedback from parents that it was a fab adventure for their son or daughter.

  • Impact

The project will mean outdoor education becomes the norm for the spring to Autumn seasons. Camping will become the norm for Beaver Scout and Cub Scout leaders in planning residential experiences. Success is that 95% of all young people of the Group have experienced an annual outdoor residential experience. Over time we hope that it becomes the norm for young people to experience 3 or more outdoor camps and that their knowledge of the great outdoor grows.

There is a risk that one of the campsites we wish to use is not available. We have dealt with this in the past by having other locations on a reserved list for use. The other risk is that key personnel for the delivery of the project are unavailable. We have a large number of occasional helpers that can be called upon to supplement the leadership team.

Funders of the project will receive a monthly email on the project detailing the ongoing and future activities. We will also report success of the outdoor residential experiences by a photographic report.

  • Background

Whitley Bay and Monkseaton are the areas where the greatest number of young people we work with live. The members of the group are a diverse group which represents all sections of society.

Young people have no experience of having an adventure that introduces them to the outdoors. We have the opportunity to build upon indoor experiences. 40 young people will have the opportunity to discover the great outdoors. This experience will include woodcraft, nature study, campcraft, backwoods cooking.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We have successfully run residential experiences for young people for over 30 years. Our group holds the local record for giving young people more residential experiences than any other local group, something that is confirmed by the young people's parents and the number of young people who wish to join the group.
