Life Skills House

To develop a building on our school site where our students, who all have some degree of learning disability, can learn and practise the functional life skills needed to run a home such as cooking, cleaning, decorating, home maintenance and budgeting, in order to promote their future independence.

    In Hertfordshire, there is inadequate provision for young people with learning difficulties to acquire the skills they need to gain a degree of independnce.

    Solution

    By developing a Life Skills house on our school site, all our students will have access to a high-quality learnig provision where they can develop their skills in a safe and supported environment.

    Activities

    » Carry out a feasibility study to identify appropriate locations and design for the Life SKills House.
    » Consult with appropriate professionals - planners, architects, construction companies - to finalise design and costs.
    » Publicise the project to attract supporters and funding
    » Implement construction of the Life Skills House

    Success will be establishment of a Life Skills House at The Collett School.


  • Impact

    Impact

    All our students will have access to the Life Skills House as part of their daily curriculum, and this will contribute significantly to their independent skills as they prepare to leave school and move on into the community. Success will be demonstrated through the achievements of our students obtaining appropriate accreditated qualifications, and through recognition of their skills by their parents, families and future learning providers.

    Risk

    There is a risk that the process may overrun due to requirements for agreement wiht local authority departments. We will deal with this through early consultation with all interested parties.

    Reporting

    Reporting is proposed on a half-termly basis through written interim reports. Donors will also be kept informed more frequently by email updates.

    Location

    In the grounds of The Collett School, Hemel Hempstead

    Beneficiaries

    Primarily students at the school and their families. Young people in the wider community would have the opportunity to use the facility as we develop links with other local schools and community groups.

    We are the assocation most strongly linked with the school, being formed of parents, carers, teachers and governors. We aim to tap into the skills of our parents and of local businesses in order to make the project a success.
