For 17 years WEB has delivered an award winning service for women (and girls 9-16) with complex needs. Local requests for WEB to set up services for men/boys, providing Drop-In, Counselling, holistic therapies and training to support both personal & practical skills and emotional development.

User –Led service based in deprived Bidston ward of Wirral for 17 years. Receiving over 250 new referrals per year from 59 organisations across Wirral. Over 80 % of our service users experience poor physical/mental health including; depression, Bi Polar, Anxiety, Isolation, Alcohol/Substance misuse, poverty/neglect. There are no similar services such as ours in the surrounding areas that support men and boys with their personal, professional and emotional development.
The aim is to up-skill 20 Volunteers (mainly men) focusing on those who have/are experiencing poor health/life related difficulties. Provide Drop In services for men/boys, with positive role models, improving community cohesion, and enhancing volunteers future employability prospects. Providing an intensive training package of support that builds up the volunteers confidence, self esteem, emotional intelligence, communication skills, relationship skills and practical experience.

Activities» Hold stakeholders event promoting the project, requesting support from partner organisations, and community.
» Recruit, interview, select volunteers from disadvantaged/deprived communities
» Facilitate/Deliver volunteer induction/variety of training to all new volunteers
Success will be...Opening Drop-In services for men/boys with complex needs; delivering training, counselling, holistic therapies that are regularly accessed within the community.
20 volunteers to make a positive impact within their community by providing services for men/boys
Activities» Provide practical and hands on experience for volunteers via Drop-In, and satellite services
» Provide ongoing peer mentors, shadowing support and supervision to support new volunteers in their roles
» Provide practical experience to co-lead and deliver workshops for service users in the community, supporting cycle of sustainability via volunteering
Success will be..Reporting enhanced C.V.’s personal/practical skills, increased emotional intelligence employability prospects, making a positive impact within their community.
Supporting the regeneration of Wirral’s deprived communities. Recruiting, upskilling individuals experiencing health/life difficulties. Increasing confidence, self esteem, emotional intelligence, communication skills. Forming positive relationships through good role models. Learning a variety of new skills, techniques, practical experiences, that support change/solutions to everyday life challenges. Improved community/family cohesion, life experiences, future employability prospects.
By the very nature of the client group we are engaging with (those with complex needs). There is a risk that volunteers drop out of the volunteer training pacakge. We will deal with this risk by over –recruiting volunteers to account for any drop out.
Men/boys not engaging with services available to them from historically Women’s organisation. WEB delivered Earth Angels pilot project to men and boys to ascertain uptake and issues that may arise. Vital feedback incorporated into plan.
Donors to this project will receive a comprehensive final year report, that reports on ALL project activity, recruitment, inductions, training undertaken, workshops delivered, number of people reached. Volunteer/service user testimonies on the difference it has made to them, and community impact

Based in Bidston ward of Wirral (highest child poverty in UK). (Govt Ind. 2007) Wirral is 8th most deprived area in England. High concentrations of worklessness, Birkenhead falling within the 3% most deprived areas in the country. Obvious disadvantages of living in poverty; lack of hope/aspirations, low confidence/ esteem, high levels of worklessness, isolation, multiple disadvantages around poor mental/physical health, high levels of drug/alcohol abuse, domestic/societal violence
This project will benefit mainly men/boys, but also women and girls experiencing poor physical/mental health including; depression, Bi Polar, Anxiety, Isolation, Bullying, Alcohol/Substance misuse, Poverty and Neglect. Victims/survivors of domestic and societal violence, young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET), adults who have poor educational experiences, low skills, confidence, esteem. Families who are 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation unemploymed.
WEB is a ‘User-Led’ service,serving the deprived community of Bidston & wider Wirral for over 17 years. Staffed by 3 paid staff & 21 volunteers, ensuring cycle of sustainability through ongoing training & support for volunteers. Quality of WEB’s services acknowledged by ‘The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services ‘ 1 of 2 organisations to receive the award in 2007’ from 253 nominations.
