Bringing the outside in - creating a sensory space
St Mary's will create suitable spaces for patients beds from our ward to be pushed outside to our courtyard. We will improve the courtyard area to include dementia friendly gardens, raised flower beds and install a water feature. We will decorate the ward to brighten the environment for patients
Charity information: St Mary's Hospice
A number of improvements to the hospice building have facilitated significant enhancements to the quality and nature of the services provided. All changes have enriched the environment for patients.
However, the Hospice strives to always look for areas where we can improve facilities. An area identified for improvement by those recently surveyed was our ward. There is no doubt that the ward is extremely safe and clean, but there are aspects where a small change will make a big difference.
Quality sits at the centre of all that the Hospice does. Our vision is that all adults within South Cumbria with a life-limiting condition will have high quality care and support at the end of their life in the place that they choose. By making these changes to the courtyard and making improvements to the physical environment of our ward– new curtains, lighting, bedding and decoration of the rooms etc we can make a stay at St Mary's as reassuring and comfortable as possible for patients.
Improve our internal courtyard and ward environment
Activities» Create suitable spaces for beds from our ward to be pushed outside onto our courtyard space.
» Develop the courtyard to include dementia friendly gardens
» Create raised flower beds so that patients can work in the courtyard garden area if they feel able to do so and install a water feature
» Install more storage facilities in patient rooms an make improvements to the physical environment – new curtains, lighting, bedding and decoration.
Success will be securing the funding to make the changes and then developing a plan with the assistance of patients and carers.
Due to the ever increasing demand for Hospice services, the need for St Mary's Hospice to be effective in its work has never been stronger and the need for high quality supportive and palliative care in the Furness and South Lakes area continues to increase. We must be willing to adapt and to engage without losing the unique qualities of hospice services that benefit hundreds of local people and their families every year.
There is a risk that we may not get the necessary funding or that due to the nature of the building that we are unable to do the structural work required in the internal courtyard. However, we will ensure that we revise our plans where necessary and find suitable alternative solutions to ensure that we make the changes to the colour and layout of the space.
Donors will receive printed newsletter, electronic mailings and through the use of social media networking information about the ongoing activities on a monthly basis.

St Mary's Hospice is situated in Ulverston on a peninsula of the rural county of Cumbria 25 miles from the M6 motorway. Our catchment area stretches from the Borough of Barrow, in the South, the home of our largest population base to Kendal in the North. The Hospice is centrally located and ideally positioned to meet the needs of all patients and their families in the locality.
Quality sits at the centre of all that the Hospice does. Our vision is that all adults within South Cumbria with a life-limiting condition will have high quality care and support at the end of their life in the place that they choose.
The main beneficiaries from our new facilities created through this project will be those adults in South Cumbria who require high quality care at the last stages of their illness and the families who are visiting their loved ones.
We successfully deliver services in the community and have a track record of high quality delivery. We have experience in a wide range of services, volunteering opportunities, events and project management that will contribute to the successful running of the project together with established links and networks.
