  • Need

National statistics show that over 60% of people with learning disabilities are classed as overweight or obese. Our Members (people with learning disabilities) often find it difficult to engage in active and healthy lifestyles. They may lack the confidence to take part in pre arranged community activities or the ability to exercise without support. They may not know which foods they should eat, or understand the benefits of a nutritious diet.

We will employ a Health Co-ordinator who will instigate new sporting groups (eg Zumba, cycling etc); oversee the running of existing groups (swimming and football); encourage the widespread involvement of Members in our nutritious cookery classes and healthy eating programme; and develop relationships between SWALLOW Members, local nutritionists and GPs to develop a safe and sustainable programme of healthy, active living.
