The Big Tree Plant - Our trees need your help!
With your help we can engage 1 million people in helping support our native woods and trees at a time of need. Tree planting is as important as ever - to build the strong network of habitats for our countryside in the face of growing threats from pests and disease and climate change.
November 2012 - March 2013
Charity information: Woodland Trust
Trees are vital for life - they improve our environment, provide habitats for wildlife and are places of reflection and play. Yet while many of our vital trees and woods are under threat from disease, damage or destruction, our children continue to loose their connection with nature. The Woodland Trust's aspiration to double the UK's native woodland cover remains crucial – we must continue to plant millions of trees now, for wildlife, people and our future.
Planting trees has the power to restore our landscape, breath life into our communities and inspire our children with a fresh love of nature and a determination to act on its behalf. With your help we will continue to foster a national tree planting movement through Jubilee Woods and give everyone the chance to reconnect with nature and plant the vital woods and trees our country needs - and most importantly help support our native woods and trees at a time of need.
Engage 1 million people in The Big Tree Plant
Activities» Host public tree planting events at woods across the UK, including in all four countries, & support anyone who wants to plant a tree at home
» Distribute over 20,000 free tree packs to school and communities to plant, & provide schools with resources to inspire children to learn about trees
» Create an online & offline Royal Record of trees planted for the Diamond Jubilee, to be presented to The Queen & a copy held in the British Library
» Develop online resources & activities to encourage everyone to participate in the UK's Biggest Tree Planting Event & record their experiences
What success will look like
Evidence collected of the number of trees planted and the number of people involved through our activities, as well as qualitative evidence through quotes, pictures and stories.
We feel the UK needs twice as many native trees and woods for the sake of wildlife and people, to improve our environment and to build a network of habitats to make our countryside more resilient in the face of threats from climate change and pests and disease, such as ash dieback. By delivering The Big Tree Plant, we have the power to engage the nation in the issues faced by woodland and our environment today, plant millions of trees and inspire the next generation to act as their Guardians.
If we do not raise the money needed, the vital woods and trees this country needs will not be planted, and more than a million people will miss out on the opportunity to mark this special moment in our history and get out into nature. We may also fail to gear up the funding already secured for the project.
A full project report will be completed at the end of Jubilee Woods, of which these activities form a part. This will be shared with stakeholders, summarising total fundraising, project outputs and outcomes, and case study evidence. We also already report on project progress with our stakeholders.

Tree planting forms part of Jubilee Woods, the Woodland Trust's nationwide project to involve at least 3 million people in planting 6 million trees in celebration of Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee. This is the nation's chance to get involved in Jubilee Woods and plant the vital trees needed to help reforest the UK, from the Scottish Highlands to Cornwall, from County Antrim to the Pembrokeshire coast.
The Big Tree Plant will involve at least 1 million people in making a real and long term difference for the environment, for everyone. It will engage the nation in a national tree planting movement, helping our young people forge a connection with nature and bringing communities together - mixing neighbours, fostering cultural diversity and cultivating a powerful sense of belonging.
The Woodland Trust has expensive experience in delivering successful, nationwide projects of this kind. Our acclaimed millennium project, Woods on your Doorstep, successfully involved local communities in creating 250 new local community woods across the UK, and over the ensuing decade we have initiated and developed programmes involving millions of people, especially children, in tree planting and restoring our native woodland habitats.
