Break-Away for vulnerable older people
We want to take away a group of vulnerable, isolated older people for a Break-Away, giving them social opportunities and helping them to make new friends and enhance their independence.

Charity information: NBFA Assisting the Elderly
The huge problem of loneliness and isolation for many older people on low incomes.
By giving them a chance to meet new people, to have fun, to socialise and to be given respite from the difficult situations that they are in.
For the lonely older people who come away with us to have social opportunities.
Activities» Coming away on the Break-Away itself. They will be up to 90 other people, in a new and exciting environment.
» The range of activities on the Break-Away, from trips out to entertainment and activities at the hotel.
What success will look like
Success will be for the older people to report back to us that they have increased their social confidence, made friends and had fun
For the social contacts that they make to be maintained and strengthened
Activities» During the Break-Away itself we will encourage the older people to consider remaining in touch. We will give out a 'memory book' which helps
» We will arrange a subsequent meetup of the trip participants, such as a lunch close to where they live
What success will look like
Success will be for the older people to report back to us that they have maintained contact with each other, and for the Reunion gathering to be successful.
The older people who come away with us will have a wider number of social contacts and have more independence and confidence. We will survey them some time after the trip to find out the ways in which it has helped them.
One risk could be the accommodation that they stay in. To combat this, all hotels are checked beforehand by staff members and staff/volunteers look out for risks while on the trips.
Another might be the risk of one of the older people falling ill during the trip (as many have health complaints). There are a number of ways in which we mitigate against this. One is that we have a copy of the prescriptions for the participants so in the event of an emergency we can assist medical staff quickly.
We currently report to donors thought our Annual Review and through targeted reports that meet their individual requirements.

The NBFA has 55 years of experience in supporting vulnerable older people. We take away up to 1000 older people a year on Break-Away trips and have the staff, volunteers and procedures in place. We also have a good relationship with the holiday provider meaning that they know the standards we expect, with the hotels themselves, and with the coach drivers who we handpick.
