  • Need


    Gulu, Uganda has experienced over 20 years of civil unrest with over 80% of the local population living in Internally Displaced Camps. In post conflict Uganda, adult education and vocational development is stagnant. The Skills for Life programme targets this post conflict vacuum.


    By providing opportunities, activities and practical programmes for educational and vocational development at a local and accessible level the community will be empowered and gain new skills. This will allow them to be better equipped for the job market and be able to support their families. This project builds on our 12 years of experience and success working in this desperate locality, which was once described as the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

    Aim 1

    Provide accessible education & vocational courses linked to income generating opportunities.


    » Run 18 literacy centres, providing functional adult literacy in the community.
    » Providing 18 literacy classed in 18 prisons in Northern Uganda
    » Run 5 vocational training courses linked to income generating opportunities e.g. the sewing school which leads to a tailoring business
    » Establish a resource centre with class rooms and community library

    What success will look like

    - Government accredited courses with a minimum of 400 students/year.
    - Providing income generating business opportunities for a minimum of 5 graduates from each course

  • Impact


    To establish a practical educational and vocational infrastructure that supports the regeneration and empowerment of a previously displaced population that is trying to build a sustainable social and economic future. This will be demonstrated through the establishment of 5 community based courses for development.


    Where government based educational accreditation is not present - We have dealt with this by establishing a graduation level based on the educational system in the UK and similar courses in Uganda.


    A bi-monthly report, sent via email, detailing activities, testimonials, and adjustments as the project develops will be sent from Uganda. This will then be compiled to monthly and bi-annual reports. The bianual report will include a financial report. These reports will be sent to donors.

  • Background


    Gulu is in Northern Uganda with a population of 146858. Northern Uganda has endured a violent civil war that has spanned more than two decades. The region has experienced large scale destabilisation & devastation of a society as a result of the conflict.
    Today the people of Gulu have peace, however they face poverty, high rates of HIV/AIDS, lack of education & the erosion of traditional culture. There has been a lack of investment in schools, vocational institutes, prisons, clinics & hospitals.


    Local citizens of Gulu across a broad spectrum of the community, including women, young people, children, orphans, widows and disfranchised young men.

    Why Us?

    TEAMS has over 20 years of partnerships and relationships with communities in Gulu and 12 years working with locally based organisations, government bodies, educational institutions and international organisations working in Northern Uganda.
    We understand the issues intimately and are ideally placed to carry this project forward. We are one of the few organisations already holding adult literacy and vocational courses in this area and have pioneered community health initiatives locally.

    Samuel Nyeko is a coordinator for the Bee Project, the Farm Assistant and documents all TEAMS projects.
