English classes at Hackney Migrant Centre

Being able to learn English is a big problem for many refugees and migrants. Our classes offer the opportunity to learn English and also a space to talk to and meet other migrants.

Many of our desitute students need help towards the cost of travel to be able to come the classes.

Our English classes are part of our ongoing drop-in sessions

  • Need

Many migrants and refugees struggle to access English classes. This can because they are still waiting for the Home Office to resolve their immigration status and are not elgibile for college courses or because they are 'no recourse to public funds' and cannot afford course fees.

Our courses are free and open to all migrants but many students cannot afford to come regularly or have to stop coming because they cannot afford to pay for the travel costs to the classes.

HMC's ongoing English classes are free to all refugees and migrants. International House generously provides a free English teacher twice a week to offer classes to our visitors.

By providing travel costs we will be able to offer more students the opportunity to learn English in a safe and welcoming environment. Many students then manage to find jobs or go onto other courses once they have sorted out their immigration status.

Success will be ensuring that we can cover the travel costs to assist students to be to attend classes regularly and have the best chance of improving their English

  • Impact

Being able to speak and understand English is essential for migrants to be able to participate in society. Migrants need to be able to make sure they are understood and understand others to ensure that they can access their rights and entitlements, as well as socialise with others.

The main risks to the project would be if we ran out of money to pay for the hall hire for the English classes. HMC actively fundraises on a continuous basis to ensure that we have enough funds to sustain the English classes.

All donors will be sent copies of our annual reports.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Hackney Migrant Centre is a well respected drop-in centre for migrants. We are visited by over 500 visitors each year and many agencies sign-post to our service.

We have many students coming or wishing to come to our English classes and would like to be able to assist more migrants to access them who currently can't because they cannot afford the travel costs.
