Helpline publications - F.O.C to Helpline callers

Our National Helpline provides support, information and guidance to all those concerned about a bereaved child or young person. Following on from the call supporting publications are sent out free of charge. They offer anonymity and the time to absorb the intensive information at leisure.

    Need

    Adults can find it difficult to talk with children about death, often because they are dealing with their own grief, but also because they are fearful of upsetting the child. Experience has shown us that when adults try to protect children by withholding information, the child will typically fill the gaps with their own vivid imaginations; commonly blaming themselves and worrying what has become of the person who died.
    Advice over a phone line is sometimes difficult to absorb and understand.

    Solution

    Publications offer benefits of privacy and can be used flexibly - a little at a time. This equips adults to support a bereaved child at their pace, in their style and in a home environment - in a format that can be repeated again & again. Funding will ensure these materials are available to those who need it at a time when it is needed most.

  • Impact

    Impact

    The right support at the right time makes a positive difference to the well-being of bereaved children.Our publications will enable parents and other significant adults to confidently support bereaved children make sense of death and rebuild their lives.

    Risk

    The key risk is that insufficient / too many people require supporting publications. Extensive planning and monitoring will ensure that the people who most need these supporting materials will receive them free of charge.

    Reporting

    Donors will be regularly reported to via e-bulletins, newsletters, via social media updates and face to face at our events, Christmas Gathering and Family fun day.

    Our Helpline is base in Gloucestershire, however our Helpline is a national service covering the whole of the UK

    Beneficiaries

    Bereaved children and their families. The information and support available in Winston's Wish publications will enable adults to confidently talk about death and deal with grief appropriately - this in turn will allow bereaved children to make sense of death and rebuild their lives and face the future with confidence and hope.

    Winston’s Wish is the leading childhood bereavement charity in the UK - offering the widest range of practical support and guidance to bereaved children, their families and professionals.
    Winston’s Wish is the only specialist national provider of support for children bereaved through murder, manslaughter, suicide and military conflict.
    In this, our 20th anniversary year we are aiming to support 30% more people than ever before and funding for Helpline publications would help us achieve this.
