Ratang Bana (Love the children) Learning Centre

Ratang Bana, supports child and granny headed households where children have been orphaned by AIDS. The project will develop a learning centre where children living in poor overcrowded conditions have somewhere to do homework, have access to computers, books
and educational resources.

The learning centre is intended to be a permanent feature of Ratang Bana's work

  • Need

Alexandra township in Johannesburg is one of the poorest in South Africa. High crime, teenage pregnancy, drug misuse, poor housing, lack of amenities and the devastating impact of AIDS make it a dangerous and difficult place for children to grow up. Education is one route out of this poverty but township schools are failing and poorly resourced. Children living in overcrowded one room shacks have nowhere to do homework or study. With few other options the streets are where they spend most time.

Ratang Bana has a small site with a food garden and advice centre from where it provides outreach family support. It has recently acquired a portacabin which they wish to equip as a learning centre. This will provide a place for children after school and weekends where they can have a meal, access educational resources, a small library, computers and the internet. Adult volunteers will provide support and supervision offering an alternative to the temptations and dangers on streets of Alex.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To provide children with a place, resources and support to study after school and at weekends.

» Equip and furnish a portacabin, with a small library, ten computer stations, internet access and other educational materials.

    What success will look like

Success will be 40 children attending the centre each week and 300 over the year, the development of their basic skills and the improvement of their attainment levels at school

    Aim 2

Provide a safe alternative to the township streets for children to go after school and over weekend

» Provide supervised access to a small learning centre where children can get a meal, advice and support with their school work and studies.

    What success will look like

Success will be 40 children a week using the facilities, 300 children over a year, feedback on how they have benefited, a broadening of their knowledge, interests and aspirations.

  • Impact

The project will assist children at an early stage with their basic education particularly Maths and English. This will both help to motivate and assist them to achieve better pass rates and higher grades at school, in turn increasing their chances of going onto further education, university or finding employment. The project will track the childrens' progress through the local schools and their success rate at passing the matriculation exam and in gaining access to jobs and further education

There is a risk that educational resources such as computers and IT equipment could get stolen. The site has a 6ft high fence and lockable gates. Securing the learning centre will be a priority and Ratang Bana have a caretaker who, in return for free accommodation, lives on the site adjacent to the learning centre. The project is respected by the local community and its benefits valued.

Gumboots produces a newsletter 3 times a year and an Annual Report
which goes out to all our donors. Our newsletter reports on each of the projects we support highlighting case studies. We will monitor the impact of the learning centre and report this specifically to donors who support it.

  • Background

The project is based in Alexandra Township, in Johannesburg South Africa, known locally as Alex. With a population of around 400,000 living in an area about 3 square miles it is overcrowded with little recreation space. Almost 1/3 of working age adults are unemployed. Poor housing, high crime rates, teenage pregnancy and failing schools make it a harsh and difficult place for children to grow up. AIDS has also had a devastating impact leaving many housholds headed by a child or grandmother.

Vulnerable children and young people from households with no working adult living in cramped poor conditions. Whilst established in 1912, Alex was neglected during the apartheid years. This legacy lives on with a population which has expanded way beyond what was intended, overcrowding is extreme with over 20,000 living in shacks without adequate sanitation, water and infrastructure. The area lacks amenities, public open space and recreation facilities for children and young people

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We have 10 years experience of working effectively with, and funding, projects in Alexandra township. We respect the views of the project and community leaders and do not try to impose our ideas. The need for learning support and facilities has been identified by Ratang Bana's project leader and volunteers.
