  • Need

Acquired brain injury is a long-term condition which can result in a complex range of physical, cognitive and emotional problems. Survivors of brain injury often lack self-confidence and motivation. In many instances family relationships break down, leaving people isolated and without support. An apparent lack of 'physical' disabilities can mean that health & social care professionals and the general public underestimate the difficulties faced by people living with an acquired brain injury.

Headway East London provides a welcoming community which respects and values the contribution made by all its members. Specialist assessment identifies each individual's specific needs & abilities. A personalised therapy programme will then facilitate the setting and achievement of goals, by a combination of neurological physiotherapy, counselling and occupational therapy. The sharing of developing skills within Headway and the wider community increases confidence and positive self-identity.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To provide occupational therapy and counselling to members of Headway East London.

» Employ the services of an occupational therapist & a counsellor, initially for three days a week.
» Initiate an assessment procees and therapeutic programme which makes these two services available to members.
» Secure funding to cover supervision and training for the two new therapists.

    What success will look like

Success of the therapies will be monitored using validated clinical tools. Members will be seen to achieve goals, with a subsequent reduction in dependence on statutory services.

    Aim 2

To extend the neurological physiotherapy service to four days a week.

» The current physiotherapy service, which is running three days a week, will be extended by a further day.

    What success will look like

The effectiveness of the neurological physiotherapy programme is already well established. Secured funding is required to extend the service further.

  • Impact

The long-term consequences of therapeutic support will be demonstrated by measurable improvements in the members' lives. It is anticipated they will manage chronic pain, mobilise better & improve their balance; experience improved mental health; see an improvement in managing daily activities; increase participation in centre activities and within the wider community.
These beneficial results will also provide positive outcomes for the families, carers and friends of those involved.

Lack of funding to continue this programme long-term is the predominant risk. Acquired brain injury falls into two separately funded categories; physical disability and mental health. As such, the needs of people affected are often overlooked and support services underfunded by the statutory authorities.

Headway East London is determined to maintain its therapeutic programme and will continue to pursue all potential means of funding.

Individual outcomes will be continually monitored. These results will be available as case studies, alongside a regular service audit. Progress will be highlighted in the fundraising e-newsletter. More particular reporting will be provided when requested by the donor.

  • Background

Headway East London was formed 15 years ago as a direct response to an absence of long-term support for people with acquired brain injury in Hackney and the surrounding area. Although based on the Kingsland Road in Hackney, their day centre is now attended by survivors of brain injury from across fourteen East and North London boroughs.

The beneficiaries of this programme will be people living with the long-term effects of an acquired brain injury, their families and carers. Headway East London’s catchment area covers some of the capital’s poorest, most disadvantaged boroughs, which lack the support services needed by carers and families of people living with disabilities.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Headway East London is at the forefront of support for brain injury survivors, their families and carers. They run the only brain injury centre of its kind in inner London to offer specialist services and therapies. Through Co-Production– the premise that everyone has something worthwhile to contribute– members get the opportunity to make the most of their abilities & skills. This charity provides support for people to take personal responsibility for themselves to lead fulfilling lives.
