  • Need

Reduce the plight of the homeless in Islington. We have identified a growing need among the young homeless and amongst women. One size doesn’t fit all. This is as true of the chaotic homeless as of those in the housed world. SFTS is recognised in the homeless world as being particularly inclusive and sensitive to the needs of these groups. The needs of the homeless are a safe place to eat, sleep, wash and receive mentoring and help back into the job and housing markets. They need shelter.

We can get people permanently off the streets. Not just providing beds, food and a chance to wash/launder, but providing practical help/advice on housing and jobs, getting onto rehab programmes. We provide therapy/ counselling/advice and have had some real success, but we need to ensure that we continue to cater for our guests needs on an ongoing basis.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To provide a caring and safe environment for the homeless by enhancing the present facilities.

» Add an additional shower and purchase a commercial dishwasher and microwave.
» Purchase a portakabin to provide extra storage and tuition space.

    What success will look like

Success will be when our guests reside in reasonable comfort, where their basic physical requirements are met and their emotional needs are heard and addressed by people who care

  • Impact

The Islington area will see an improvement in relations between the homeless and the housed. More local community involvement will see even more volunteers come forward. We will demonstrate the success of this project by monitoring the number of guests we are empowering to move on into their own accommodation, gain employment and rebuild their lives. Over the last few months we have developed our own database that will more effectively demonstrate our outcomes.

SFTS receives no statutory funding whatsoever. This means we can support guests with no recourse to public funds or who are unable to access their benefits. The downside of this is that we are dependent on a regular flow of voluntary contributions.
We have dealt with this problem by increasing our fundraising efforts, encouraging and maintaining regular standing orders and developing our own PR and Communications group among our volunteers

We have recently developed our own database that will more effectively demonstrate our outcomes. Donors receive monthly newsletters detailing our progress ... and often they'll see it because many of them are also our volunteers.

  • Background

There are about 400,000 homeless people in Britain, and many of them gravitate towards Central London. Because of Islington’s proximity to Kings Cross it has always been a magnet for the lost and dispossessed from all over the country. Many of the agencies we work with have had their funding cut and we are finding a daily increase in demand for our shelter. We operate in one of the most deprived areas of the UK and there just isn’t enough housing provision to cater for the need

As we raise all our own money we can accept guests from any borough or agency. We believe we are the only 365 days a year shelter completely free to guests. We accept people with no recourse to public funds, refugees awaiting benefit claims, those fleeing torture or domestic violence, in fact anyone in need of respite and shelter. We provide them with a bed, dinner and breakfast, offering throughout the year a safe, loving environment where they can be listened to and sustained by volunteers

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We have become the first and only option for some of the most marginalised people in our society. We have established links with the Met Police trafficking division, Centrepoint and all the London Hospitals. Our work with women and the young is becoming increasingly vital
