The Winston's Wish Interactive Website - update
Our website provides comprehensive & in-depth advice for parents, carers, professionals & anyone supporting a bereaved child. The dedicated young person's section provides information about illnesses, causes of death & explanations for the difficult feelings they likely to be experiencing.
Charity information: Winston's Wish
Every 22 minutes a child in Britain is bereaved of a parent This equates to over 24,000 newly bereaved children each year, not counting those bereaved of a sibling, friend or other family member. these people will be dealing with a powerful range of confusing and conflicting emotions, which will often leave them feeling very angry and isolated with low self esteem.
Experience and research has shown that these children need appropriate support to help them cope with the upheaval experienced.
The upgraded web site will provide young people & the adults supporting them with a central point to access information, receive support from their peers & realise that they are not alone. All of this can be reached immediately & without anybody else ever knowing as it is completely anonymous. This is especially important for young people who can often feel reluctant & diffident about seeking help.
For adults the upgraded site will bring relief - knowing there is help available.
To upgrade the website to provide current, accessible interactive support
Activities» Involve past and existing beneficiaries to scope what is most useful, needed and wanted.
» Scope what other accessible technologies are available and that can be incorporated into the therapeutic elements of the website
What success will look like
Success will be...an increased number of visitors to all areas of the website, an increase in interactive ASK questions and peer related sections of the site.
Studies show that if childhood grief is not dealt with appropriately it can have a deep and lasting effect on a child's emotional well-being and cause problems later in life. By extending the accessibility of the site will mean that professionally qualified clinical support is given not just to bereaved children themselves but also to professionals and anyone concerned about a bereaved child - ensuring they get the right support at the right time.
There is a risk that insufficient information is obtained from the past/ current users of the site. This will make it more difficult to tailor the upgrade to what is ACTUALLY needed.
This will be overcome by developing an engaging programme of voluntary participation by showing the benefits of what could be achieved and emphasising the importance of their input.
We will report to our donors electronically, via an e-newsletter as well as Facebook and Twitter. In addition we also send out paper versions of our newsletter twice a year. Face to face we are able to report the positive effect of the money at our Christmas Gathering and at our fundraising events.

Our website currently receives around 10,000 unique visitors every month, including more than 1,000 using our interactive young people's site. But, with over 24,000 children being bereaved of a parent each year in Britain we know that we are only scratching the service. The updated website will enable us to reach more of the 24,000 children who may want bereavement support.
Winston's Wish is the leading childhood bereavement charity in the UK, offering the widest range of practical support and guidance to bereaved children, their families and professionals.
