Equiping Search Dog Handlers to Save Lives

Search dog handlers save lives working with Mountain Rescue Teams and Police Forces throughout Wales and the English Border regions. However, it costs around £2,500 per handler to equip them for the essential work that they do. We have 4 new handlers this year and need to equip them to save lives.

July 2012 - August 2013

  • Need

To equip search dog handlers, as part of SARDA South Wales, to safely and efficiently search for missing persons in mountainous, rural and urban terrain whatever the weather.

It will provide essential safety equipment to protect the handler and dog team whilst they provide an essential search resource to Police and Mountain Rescue Teams.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To train and equip handler and dog teams for work in extreme terrain and weather conditions

» To qualify dog teams to the national search dog standards and provide navigation and specialist first aid aid equipment

    What success will look like

Success will be... Dog or dog teams qualified to the nationally recognised standard, equipped and operational and saving lives throughout the united kingdom.

  • Impact

Success is measured by the number of dogs available for callout, the reduction in hours spent searching for missing, vulnerable persons and the saving of lives.

The national training standards are very high, not all dog teams qualify, and a small proportion of those that do qualify, find that the voluntary work is too arduous and demanding. We provide support and training for all dog teams and potential teams to maximise the number of dogs available during emergencies.

Donors will get email reports on the progress of dog teams and their exploits whilst searching for the missing and vulnerable.
