A new look for Paul's Cancer Support Centre

Paul’s works to improve the lives & wellbeing of people affected by cancer. Every weekday up to 40 people visit our Centre for advice & therapies such as massage. We've moved to new premises but some of our fittings & furnishings are tired & worn. Our challenge is to raise funds for replacements

  • Need


    We aim to offer a warm, welcoming setting for people who come to us at a very difficult time in their lives. We want our Centre in Battersea to be as comfortable as possible but some of the equipment and furnishings which moved with us from our old premises is now in need of replacement. The project will allow us to renew some essential items and create a brighter environment for clients.


    With input from our clients and staff, we have created a list of priorities for the Centre's upgrade. For example, our three counselling & therapy rooms are sparsely furnished, and new chairs, stools and storage will create more comfortable surroundings. The Centre has large south facing windows and new blinds will offer shade and keep rooms cool on sunny days. Some treatment rooms have harsh strip lighting, and freestanding lamps will create a softer feel.

    What success will look like

    We will carry out a survey to gauge clients' levels of satisfaction with the enhanced Centre. Success will be an 80%+ positive response

    Upgrade the Centre's therapy and counselling rooms to create more welcoming / relaxing spaces


    » purchase and install blinds for the two south-facing therapy rooms
    » Replace worn furnishings including chairs and stools
    » Install uplights or freestanding lamps as an alternative to ceiling strip lighting
    » Replace worn bath towels with new, larger bath sheets

  • Impact


    Providing a friendly and welcoming space is vital to the success of our work. Clients need to feel confident that Paul’s is there for them at all stages through their cancer ‘journey’. Most will have spent many weeks or months undergoing treatment in hospital, and we aim to provide an environment that is as far removed as possible from an ‘institutional’ setting. The refurbishment will achieve this for up to 550 people over the year.


    Because it concerns the purchase of small capital items, the risk is linked primarily to the amounts we are able to raise. If enough is donated, the project as a whole will go ahead. Our plans will of course be scaled back if our target is not reached, and funds will be spent on items according to identified priorities. For the longer term, it’s likely that we will need to create a specific fund for renewals for which an ongoing fundraising programme will be needed.


    Donors will receive an email photo diary showing ‘before and after’ changes to the Centre as a result of their contribution. Reporting will also include details of items purchased. We will share feedback from clients in the form of short interviews and survey results.

  • Background


    Paul’s Cancer Support Centre is based in the London Borough of Wandsworth. The Borough has pockets of areas of deprivation including Latchmere ward in which the Centre is based. The LB Lambeth is among the top 10% of most deprived authorities. The majority of our clients are resident in these two boroughs but our services are open to anyone in London.


    Our services are open to people with all forms of cancer from diagnosis, through medical treatment and once treatment has ended. 28% of our clients are from BME groups, and 80% are women. Clients are aged 18 to 80+, with most aged 45 - 70. We also provide help and support to the families and carers of people with cancer.

    Founded in 1983, Paul’s Cancer Support Centre is unique in the wide range of community-based services we provide for people with cancer – including counselling, various forms of massage, courses to help people to develop coping and life skills, outreach programmes targeting disadvantaged and BME communities in Wandsworth and Home Visiting Service which supports people who are housebound as a result of cancer or who are reaching the end of their lives.
