Building for the future

To celebrate the Holburne's 100th anniversary in 2016 we aim to increase our endowment to £8 million to underpin all our work and maintain free entry as Bath’s Art Museum for Everyone.

Up until the end of October 2013 all donations we receive for the endowment will be quadrupled.

  • Need

    Need

    Following an £11.2million redevelopment, completed in May 2011, the Museum has seen visitor numbers increase six times to 160,000 people a year and has received multiple awards for excellence.

    Success has also brought new challenges and, like many museums in the UK, the Holburne is facing funding challenges that threaten the provision and quality of our core work, which is to engage and inspire as wide an audience as possible to see, enjoy and interact with our distinctive collection.

    Solution

    Our proposal is to increase our existing endowment to £8million, the interest from which would generate sufficient annual income to underpin the core work of the Museum. This will ensure we continue to care for our collection, to protect it for future generations, use it to stimulate engaging learning activities for people of all ages and abilities, and interpret the collection through enthralling and innovative exhibitions and new displays.

    Activities

    » We have been awarded £1m by the Heritage Lottery Fund's catalyst endowments grant. To unlock the grant we have to match it £1 for £1 by 2016.
    » A charitable trust has awarded £250k double all donations received before 31 Oct 2013. These will be doubled again by the HLF.

    Success will be achieving our goal before 2016 and exceeding our target.


  • Impact

    Impact

    An increased endowment will protect the Museum from fluctuations in other income streams and the vicissitudes of the financial markets. Success will be demonstrated by the protection of core activity such as maintaining and growing staffing levels, ensuring the highest standard of environmental conditions for the care of the collection, allowing greater confidence in forward planning for learning and exhibitions, and a broader funding base and developed income from commercial activities.

    Risk

    We are committed to developing all activities while retaining free entry to the collection; this depends on increasing the endowment to £5m to be sustainable. The main risk has been overcome with the award of £1m from DCMS / Heritage Lottery Fund Catalyst: Endowments scheme. To secure this grant we must raise a further £1m by 30-Jun-16. The recent fundraising for the redevelopment strengthened our fundraising capabilities and relationships with donors. We are confident of achieving our goals.

    Reporting

    The Museum will report its progress regularly online and once a year in its annual review. All donors to the project will be kept informed of significant milestones and achievements through personal correspondence and invitations to events at the Museum.

  • Background

    Location

    The Holburne is an Accredited, university museum that plays a central role in local cultural life, connecting residents and students of Bath with an important aspect of the city’s heritage, as well as being a collection of national significance. It's home is in the exceptional UNESCO world heritage city of Bath. The Holburne has been housed since 1916 in the Grade I listed building The Sydney Hotel and will celebrate 100 years in its home in 2016.

    Beneficiaries

    People can get involved and learn about the Holburne’s collection in a number of ways: as visitors, through participation and learning activities, as volunteers, and as artists. The groups of people who will benefit from activities facilitated by the endowment are: interested adults of all ages both local and non-local; tourists ; local older people (65+); families and pre-school to secondary school children; university students; vulnerable young people and adults.

    Why Us?

    The Holburne has an established track record. The Museum has been doing its work, from its award winning creative learning to its highly regarded exhibitions, well for a long time and we want to continue doing these activities, only better. We are the only art museum in the south west thinking on this scale – our redevelopment project is tangible evidence of our ambition and our capability of carrying out this task.

    Richard Fleck, Chairman Of The Trustees (Appointment On 29 June 2012)

    As the Chairman of the Trustees Richard will lead the fundraising campaign with support from the Museum Director and Head of Development.

    Manages the Museum's activities and development of its programmes and strategies.

    Will deliver the fundraising campaign for the endowment, along with the annual fundraising needs of the Museum.

    Will manage the endowment fund as the head of the Holburne’s Investment Committee.
