  • Need

The Oasis Centre is based in Gorton, ranked within the bottom 1.26% of neighbourhoods in the latest government Indices of Multiple Deprivation. Iindividuals are caught in third generation unemployment amid addiction, depression, isolation and low self-esteem. This causes a great strain on their families and the wider community. A large percentage of Oasis' clients have few or no qualifications and no aspirations or prospects for a healthy positive lifestyle outside of the 'benefit trap'.

The Oasis Centre would like to run FREEDOM ED, a 1-year education programme which will deliver basic life skills training and introduce our clients to literacy, numeracy, ITC, and art in a creative and non-threatening way. We have shown that this helps 'hard to reach' and 'complex family' clients to engage in learning and gives them the confidence to access basic education and training, bettering their chances of full-time employment and challenge their chaotic and unhealthy lifestyle choice

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To deliver a year programme of creative and engaging basic life skill training starting January 2015

» Run 40 sessions of 'English For Everyone' throughout 2015 focusing on improving self-esteem, confidence, speaking, communicating and listening.
» Run 40 sessions of 'Maths Made Easy' throughout 2015 focusing on confidence building, budgeting, listening to and following simple instructions.
» Run 40 sessions of 'Urban Art' throughout 2015 focusing on improving self-awareness, and starting and finishing a project.
» Run 40 sessions of 'Basic ITC' throughout 2015 focusing on job search, writing C.V's, learning basic Word, internet access and navigation.

Success will be receiving 8-10 new clients onto each course every term and seeing 4 clients each term onto further accredited education, training or employment.

  • Impact

The FREEDOM ED year programme helps 'hard to reach' individuals and 'complex families' break the third generation benefit cycle by giving each individual the encouragement, motivation and self-esteem needed to springboard them into education, training and employment leading to a healthier lifestyle and well-being. All individuals accessing our FREEDOM ED programme will enrolled onto our Getting Work-Ready scheme and monitored on a monthly basis.

There is a risk that because of the very nature of our 'hard to reach' and 'complex families' living chaotic lifestyles, individuals won't turn up for lessons. This has been a risk The Oasis Centre has been dealing with for the last 12 years. We take pride in our one-to-one approach with each individual who uses our services and try and create a comfortable, safe and welcoming environment offering many different activities in our Centre that encourages our clients to regularly attend

Funders of the FREEDOM ED programme can expect regular newsletters updating them of our clients' progress and of The Oasis Centre as a whole helping them to see how our FREEDOM ED programme fits into our very successful, sustainable and holistic approach to our East Manchester communities.

  • Background

FREEDOM ED will be run as part of our Getting Work-Ready Scheme at The Oasis Centre. The Oasis Centre is a well used and respected day centre which has been running for over 12 years supporting vulnerable adults and complex families in the deprived inner city area of Gorton, east Manchester. The Oasis Centre helps individuals and families become vibrant, significant and contributing members of their communities. The Oasis Centre supports an average of 100 people a week.

Everyone! This includes adults with multiple needs such as those coming out of custody, drug or alcohol dependency, homelessness, people struggling with mental health issues, victims of abuse, people with very low levels of basic skills, people living on benefits and third generation 'benefit dependent' complex families, asylum seekers and refugees. The Oasis Centre serves the communities of Gorton, ranked within the bottom 1.26% of the most deprived neighbourhoods in the latest government IMD.
