FoodCycle Hub Programme

FoodCycle Hubs are local projects where volunteers collect surplus food, take it to spare kitchen spaces and cook it into healthy, community meals.

These are served in a warm and welcoming environment to people at risk from food poverty and social isolation in the community.

  • Need


    Over 4 million people are affected by food poverty in the UK yet at least 400,000 tons of perfectly edible surplus food gets thrown away by supermarkets each year. Food poverty can affect many different people, including older people, low-income families, the unemployed, homeless people, people affected by mental ill health, and many others. Meanwhile, there are over 1.2 million young unemployed in the UK who could benefit from rewarding volunteering opportunities in their community.


    At FoodCycle we think it's ridiculous to throw away perfectly edible food when there are people who need it in the very same communities. So we're doing something about it.

    Each week, our teams of energetic volunteers collect surplus food from local retailers and cook it into healthy meals for people at risk from food poverty and social isolation in the community; bringing people from all walks of life together at the dining table over a nutritious three-course meal in a friendly atmosphere.

    Aim 1

    Reduce food poverty in the UK.


    » Serve over 21,000 nutritious meals each year across 14 Hubs to vulnerable groups at risk from food poverty and social isolation.
    » Promote healthy eating in the community.

    Success will be...21,000+ nutritious meals served to people at risk from food poverty each year. Since May 2009 we've served over 37,000 meals.

    Aim 2

    Reduce food waste in the UK.


    » Reclaim perfectly edible food from supermarkets that would otherwise be thrown away.
    » Work at a policy level with our patron Kerry McCarthy MP to encourage businesses and people to waste less food.

    Success will be...reclaiming as much food as possible to create healthy meals for those in need. Since May 2009 we've reclaimed over 32,000kg of food for use.

    Aim 3

    Reduce social isolation and build stronger communities.


    » Bring people from all walks of life together in a safe and welcoming communal dining environment to share a three-course meal.

    Success will be...creating weekly community dining events to bring people from all walks of life together.

    Aim 4

    Empower volunteers to develop skills and create positive social change in the community.


    » Support our network of over 1000 volunteers to make their project as fantastic as possible.
    » Provide practical opportunities for skills development and training at our annual conference for volunteer leaders.

    Success will and supporting over 120 project leaders, and over 1000 volunteers nationwide.

  • Impact


    Food poverty and food waste shouldn't co-exist - so we're doing something about it. We want communities to unite to make sure no good food is wasted when people need it.


    Risk of unreliable food suppliers. We've dealt with this by establishing national links with food retailers including Sainsburys, Waitrose, and Planet Organic. In the long-term we aim to build even more partnerships.


    We collect monthly outputs on how many meals we've served and how many kg of food we've reclaimed. We will email donors each month to tell them about this and collect case studies from beneficiaries and volunteers of our 14 Hubs across the UK to send to donors and supporters.

  • Background


    Nationwide. We currently have projects in Bath, Bristol, Birmingham, Cambridge, Clacton on Sea, Durham, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Norwich, and we have 4 across London.


    Our projects serve meals to people at risk from food poverty and social isolation in communities, including homeless people, people affected by mental ill health, low-income families, older people, and refugees.

    Why Us?

    We already run these 14 Hubs across the UK with our network of over 1000 volunteers. Since we started cooking in May 2009 we have served over 37,000 meals, reclaimed over 32,000 kg of food and our volunteers have given over 20,000 hours of their time. We have also built partnerships with over 50 charities nationwide – including MIND, the Salvation Army, and Asylum Link.

    Kelvin is the founder and CEO of FoodCycle, having started the charity back in 2008. His vision is key to developing FoodCycle in the future.
